Main Bearing Replacement?
« on: Jan 07, 2009, 09:59:55 AM »
This question has a 95% possibility of being a stupid question.......but, is there a way to replace the main bearing on my 22r without taking the motor out?

Yes. And there are 3 main bearings. You can pull the cap, and the lower half of the bearing, then push the upper half around and remove it. Push the new upper in, lining the dimple up in the notch, put the lower half in the cap, and reinstall it (be sure to re-install the cap the same way it came off). Make sure to use a good pre-lube on all of the new bearings!

I would also suggest replacing the rod bearings while you are in there. If the mains need to be replaced because of wear, then the rod bearings will have similar (or worse) wear.

Just thought of another question. Is this IFS or solid? Lift?

thanks....but iam just gonna pull the engine out tomorrow. but it is an '85 solid axle. pretty much just the block sitting in there anyways so iam just going to pull the whole crank and mic it.

A little story behind all this... My head gasket was letting a little oil into my coolant and vice-versa, so i got a gasket kit to replace the head gasket. I had to order new head bolts from online so i had some time to kill.

With that time i decided to put a new door buzzer because my old one sounded like a giant grass hopper dying. so with that said i was turning my key in the off pos. to the acc. position testing the new buzzer and one thing led to another and i cranked the motor (should have disconnected the battery! :smack:) and the timing chain slaped into both chain guides, bending one and shattering the other.so before all this i was just going to put a head gasket and rod bearings and maybe slip the mains in if i could, but it looks like iam looking at a modest rebuild  since i have the engine this stripped iam just pulling it.

putting
-oil pump (Really grooved out stock Aisin)
-timing cover
-timing chain kit
-main and rod bearings
-piston and rings
-rear main seal
-maybe a mediocre clutch kit if funds allow.
and not to mention the head gasket and new door buzzer!!

:tantrum: I constantly have luck like that. And still don't disconnect the battery when working on stuff. :willynilly: Good luck on the rebuild.

If you remove the radiator, and pull the fan, you should have plenty of room to slide the engine off of the tranny, then lift just the engine out. Just make sure to suspend the trans from the frame, not the floor, since when you start relieving the weight of the engine, the truck will lift.

I guess I should correct myself here, there are 5 main bearings. one front, one rear and three between the rods. :_oops:
