what exactly are you looking for, your question is very vague

im sure toyota thinks the best one is oem.....

generally, for an ifs rig, i would say the stock idler, not an aftermarket, although some can be good. the ifs itself is a weak system, and in stock form, there isnt much that can be done....

i believe downey off road makes an idler arm brace/gusset that is supposed to be pretty beefy and help out a good deal, have heard it only works with the oem and not the aftermarket ones though

from what i have seen and used, MOOG produces some of the best aftermarket chassis parts. my truck had a brand new NAPA idler on it and seems to be good so far, but it spends a ton of time on the street, for now.

Downey invented the Idler Arm Gusset; it is no more than another remedy for another problem. As we discover what can be bent or broken, we produce the bullet proofing. Most cases of bent idler arms are found on Toyota’s with 4 inch lift kits, but occasionally we find a bent Idler Arm on a Toyota less radically equipped, but more radically used off road. The idler Gusset is a simple bolt-on device, silver powder painted for lasting durability.

pretty much anything over 31's (33's for sure) will bend the crap out of them. gussett is a must in my book (well unless u like to change idler arms for fun, they ain't cheap either)  :cheese:

i have heard good things about the idler arm brace as well

my brother runs the total chaos idler arm which is very pricey. its beefy, but the bearings are wearing must faster than they should. hes had it for two years and you can feel noticeable slop.

i have bent my stock idler and replaced it with a friends moog after he sased. personally i think if you are in the right crowd, you can find some post sas leftovers for free.

downey products are top notch  but typically  they dont recommend more than 33's on a 3 inch lift

Well bending isnt the only issue.  With balljoint spacers it puts alot of stress on the pin connection it to the steering rod and my buddies sheered off while wheeling.  Mine is bent to crap too.
Also OEM idler arms have replacable bushings while most aftermarket ones do-not.

sorry to bring an old thread back to life (but I was doing a search before I posted) and this is the most relevant.

I have an 87 4x4 Xcab (IFS) I run OEM 15x8 rims with 31"x10.5 tires. I take it off-roading and pound it pretty hard.

Question: I replaced the Idler arm with Moog about 2 years ago and when I had the front end jacked up I noticed it already had quite a bit of slop in it - when I turned the tires by hand to bleed out the power steering I noticed the idler arm that connects to the steering relay rod was moving up and down in an excessive amount. Can somebody tell me how much play is normal?

Anybody have a tight OEM Idler they want to sell?

What test can be done to check if the pitman arm needs replacing?

thanks
