Rocks Runner
« on: Mar 30, 2010, 01:35:43 PM »
Hey everyone, some of you know me but I haven't really posted here since I was just a "Co-Pilot" to Rocksurfer, that is until now. With my 16th birthday behind me we have started to build my 4Runner so I thought I might throw up a few teaser shots of it for you guys. We bought it with the frontend wrecked and was the 1st thing we addressed, it was decided by my uncle "spinnin4s" to get fiberglass fenders for it instead of steel, we'll see how long those last. It was then re-painted white, got some black steel rims for it but haven't decided on the tires for it yet so it has some street tires for now. The best thing of all is it was a gift from my uncle, so can you say free? Last week my dad and I set out to get it running again since it was given to me around 2 years ago, took about 15 minutes and a squirt of quick start get it fired. My dad did pour some kind of oil into the spark plug holes and engine but it started right up. It needs a battery too so we'll get that taken care of. The plans are a typical "Rocksurfer" build for now but I'm taking metals in school and am learning to weld. He said I should start this thread to document the progress, so here's my truck in its current condition, not much to look at right now.

It is a great starter, we have actually had it since 2005. My brother just can't resist a potential 4x4 even though he usually never fixes one that he does buy. That IH sitting next to the 4Runner was picked up in 2002 as was the black 4Runner on the other side. The IH was just made to run and pass smog last week, the black 4Runner is still a non-runner and was recently traded for a CJ-6 pickup which will sit forever too.

This one though will be on the trail shortly.........

Sooo, it's been a while for this. It kinda got mothballed for the summer but now that RFB got his drivers license last week it needs to come back to the fore front. Since it has been sitting it was a hard start going to drop the tank and clean it out. Had to put a new fuel pump in since the old one sucked up its screen. Hope to have it on the road in a week or so. Then we'll start getting it ready for offroad, too bad it won't be in time for MC.

She is on the road, gave it to him last week. Plan on taking it on its maiden offroad voyage on Halloween weekend to Calico, still stock but it should be just fine. I wonder what is on his Christmas wish list?

It was a frontend wreck when we got it, fixed it and put some Downey Fenders on it before they closed, a mild lift, some lockers, gears, flat belly, single case, and hopefully 37's. That's my thoughts on it, we'll see what he wants though.

:ack: sparkplug blew out of the #4 cyl., looks like time for a heliocoil. Scared the crap out of him, when I showed up he says, "I didn't do it I swear I checked the oil."  I hop in fire it up, he looked really scared since I put on my mean look. I shut it off and asked him about the oil and he pulls the stick as says see its got oil. I casually say I could add oil to a blown motor too, looked like he was gonna cry. Then I grab the #4 wire and show it to him with the plug still attached. He looked like he wanted to kill me :gap:

Eh, it's no big deal really, just going to re-tap it and thread in a heliocoil and be done with it.

Only a month later but got the heliocoil in today and it sounds good again except for a tick now, might just need to adjust the valves this weekend.

Houston we have a problem!!!

Sorry about the late update but was doing some other things. Adjusted the valves and the tick remains and there also seems to be a modest lose of power, I have a bad feeling that a valve may have hung on it. Feels like it is running on 3 1/2 cyls., think it may have a bent valve. On the bright side I may have a donor vehicle on the horizon by next week.

Have to get the donor 1st, the poor thing won't know what hit it but it is going to come out the other end as 3 different 4Runners. Besides RFB's needs we have the other two 4Runners that will be getting parts off of it too. So yeah we will be getting to it x3.
