In over my head with NO POWER
« on: Sep 29, 2009, 07:07:17 PM »
Ok here's the dirt. 1987 turbo 4runner Auto with 152k on it. I was going to sell it due to redeployment however it looks like that's going to be pushed back for a while. So lets get started with the build up  I just bought an 1986 turbo 4x4 truck for parts with no motor but the seller said that the 5speed trans and transfer were good. This is going to be my first build up so I kinda feel like I'm in over my head. Any advice would be very helpful. So thanks in advance. Oh yeah and a big thanks to my wife she's been great and very supportive with this... :yesnod:

Damn where to start :dunno:
1)Rebuild the 22rte engine
2)Swap the auto trans to the 5speed I bought this weekend
3)Buying a 84 front solid axle this weekend and start building that
4)Change gears front and rear and spool the rear but don't know about the front yet
5)Switch to a soft top and ditch the heavy 4runner top
6) Weld on my all-pro sliders
7)Arb snorkel kit
And a ton of other crap :eyebrow:

Thinking at this point of ditching the 22rte and swapping in a FORD 302 :shocking: whats the thought on that ??? Does anyone know if the R151 turbo 5speed tranny work with the ford 302 motor :dunno:

my honest opinion is keep it light keep it a 4 banger.. Not only will the tranny and t case or cases hold up but will the axles hold up? Any one I know running a v8 and toy axles has problems blowing up ring and pinions expecially if they arent stock gears... But also depends on how you wheel aswell.

If you ditch the turbo sell it and just buy a re for what you sell the ret for
89 extra cab stock on 1 tons.
83 rolled with built toy axles
92 2wd DD
first gen cab

Check out the build.

Well went to reseal the oil pan this weekend as it was leaking really bad along with some pan bolts broke off in it and had to pull the pan to do so. Upon removing the pan I found several large chunks of metal in the pan :maddest: So it looks like I'm going to seal the motor back up and run it till it blows. Engine swap is going to be next on the list. Looking at a 7mgte or 302 which ever would be easier :gap:
