3.4V6 into an 86 4runner?
« on: Sep 15, 2008, 03:51:48 PM »
So ive been contemplating an engine swap on my 1986 sas 4runner currently running 35s because my 22-re is very tired and i want to run bigger tires so that engine just isnt going to cut it on the highway to the trails.  Ive considered the 3rz, but the 5vz looks more appealing to me, 190hp etc.  My question is, can i use the tranny from behind the 5vz, i think its a r150 with my dualcases that are on my W56 now?  If i read the taco page on marlins tcase page it looks like i just need an adapter to go from the r150 to the dual cases i already have.  Are there any real reason why the 5vz would be a poor choice as an engine swap?
Thanks
Andy

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

Yes you will need the adapter to go from a r-150f to a gear driven case. It is the 34-4gt adapter and its $349

Check out this thread, theres lots of information to look at so you can choose what one you want to do and theres a pretty good amount of information on the two swaps.
