motor swap now it wont start
« on: Sep 07, 2008, 09:46:36 PM »
ok so i pulled the motor out of a 91 stick and instilled it in a 87 automatic.  timing is spot on. we have spark and fuel at the rail. so in the best of my knowlage it should run. it did sputter when i sprayed starting fluid in it.

i do not have the toqure converter hoked up if that makes a diffrance

could your dist possibly be 180 degrees off? Or did you not remove the dist when you swapped the engines?

The TPS p/n is different on the 91 engine & that might be the problem.  Put the 87 TPS back on & try it. It's worth a try. Also the injectors look the same put are different p/n's as well but those should work.

it is grounded from the block to the body in 2 places and from the frame to the block in one with the battery cable

Let's hope it doesn't have a bent valve.  I built one of my 22re's and  when I went to fire it up, the #4 exhaust valve bent.  I think it was something stuck in the valve guide from the machining process.  Then after I pulled the head, cleaned up the valve guide and replaced the valve, it didn't want to start.  Then I realized that the crank needs to be set at 5 degrees before you line the distributor rotor up to the #1 wire.

There's something in the Hanes manual about crossing(jumping) two terminals somewhere in the engine bay so you can set the timing.  I would try that to get the engine on the same pace as the computer?

Yeah, you have to jump T1 to E1 on the DLC1 electrical connector under the hood.  This will drop the idle down to base idle so you can set the timing on the distributor.
