Looking to buy 79-83 P/U - A few questions
« on: Aug 08, 2008, 11:21:24 AM »
Hey,

I am looking to buy a pre 79-83 truck. I want to use it for daily driving, camping and moderate wheeling in the desert and taking into Baja for surf trips.

I've owned a 22re before, and never had problems with it for the 5 years I owned it. I know the 22r's are dependable, but, now that these trucks are nearing 30 years of age, are there some problem areas I should look for when inspecting a truck?

Looking at an '81 right now, 5 speed with 244k. The transmission has a decent leak, and looks as if the rear main is also leaking. The owner also says that it burns roughly a quart of oil every month. I can assume the piston rings are shot and the engine would need a rebuild.

It idles great, has good power, and looks great, but, I am worried about the engine giving out soon. Also, with the transmission leak, is that usual that a seal is shot, or is it pointing to other problems?

I've been doing as much research as I can, and have wanted a SA Truck for a while. Any help or direction would be appreciated.

i like the way the old toys drive and feel. check for rust. check the wires. if the engine is running good now, just keep water and oil in it and it'll go another 100k.

people liked the l45 4 speed, then they upgraded it to a 5 speed. it was just an l45 with a 5th gear.  if your lucky someone put an l52 in it..  (larger input bearing).  drive it in 5th gear and check that it's smooth. thats the gear that well put the most stress on the tranny. that well let you know if it's going to need work soon.

I would look for something that has not had alot of electrical mods like stereos and lights, as long as the wiring harness is not all hacked up and the body is not rusted beyond repair I would get it.  Mechanical stuff you are going to have to fix / upgrade sooner or later especially if you are going to do all the things you mentioned.  My 83 is all stock, no visible rust, 220k and has been my DD for the past 5 years. I would tell everyone that it just wont die, I would'nt hesitate to drive it anywhere.  Now everything is letting go all at once, I lost the rear third, throwout bearing (I think), the windsheild wipers, passenger seatbelt retractor all witin a week. They are tough but are still machines and wear out but I would not trade mine for anything.

Thanks for the replies.

The window sticker said it came with a 5 speed from the dealer, and he has all receipts, none saying that the tranny was changed.

Everything is bone stock on it...which I like. It drives pretty well.

The truth is that the engine and tranny will most likely need to be replaced/fixed soon, which I don't mind doing, but, I am just lazy and who knows when I'd actually get to it. ;)

I am assuming I can get a tranny pretty cheap (~200?) and rebuild the engine myself somewhat easily.

Cost is not an issue for me and my truck Craigslist will be your new best friend.  I have bought everything I wanted or needed from this board,Pirate and CL for pennies on the dollar.  The Totota dealer has suprised me many times with the availability of parts and price good and bad for my truck.  Examlpe being the front E brake cable was $29.00 but a U-joint was $62.87.  If it's all stock not hacked up get it.

yeah I'm keeping my 79 to the end. i had to live through years of regret when i sold my 81. i have a 94 4runner that is more comfortable, but I'd jump in the old truck first to go anywhere.  :driving:
