Question?  How do you know what kind of rotors you have?  I have an 80 p/u but im not sure if my rotors are factory or the upgraded fj40(i think thats what they should be)  any help would be appreciated.

If they are solid rotors they are not FJ60 rotors

if they are not vented rotors and are solid, they were not the upgraded fj60 rotors

factory stock vehicles had solid rotors.... the hilux trucks with solid axles were never available from the factory with anything else....

the upgrade you have heard about is something that someone not associated with toyota figured out and decided to do

you need ifs v6 calipers and fj60 rotors for that upgrade

Vented Front Rotors
Pickup/4 Runner / FJ 60

In order to keep the larger 1986+ calipers when doing a solid axle swap on a Pickup/4Runner you need a set of FJ 60 Land Cruiser vented rotors. These rotors also fit 82-85 Toyota Pickup/4Runner solid front axles when using 86 to 95 IFS style calipers. Simple bolt-on installation. Once rotors are installed, 1986-1995 IFS style front calipers bolt right onto the 1982-1985 solid axle knuckle.

The standard rotors found on 79 to 85 axles is a solid rotor known to warp under extreme use with large tires. The vented rotors allow for proper cooling and enhance the braking ability.

with:

V6 IFS Loaded Front Brake Calipers

We now carry in stock, V6 IFS front brake calipers. These rebuilt units, come complete with semi-metallic pads, and new pad retaining hardware. Large, 4 piston, ribbed caliper originally found on 1988-1995 V6 trucks. These are the perfect calipers for upgrading the brakes on 1979-1985 front solid axles. Use with vented rotors shown below. No core charge. Please state left or right side.

Note: Calipers may require the use of wheel spacers when used on 79-85 solid front axles.

I do not believe you have to use v6 calipers though. I have been told that the 4 cyl IFS calipers will work just fine. Correct me if I am wrong on this (and please provide the reason why I am wrong).

Correct, you can use any IFS calipers.  The v6 are just beefer versions of the 4cyl IFS calipers and are the prefered choice when doing this swap.

edit:
Sorry, confusing statement.  The beefer calipers are the prefered ones as they are beefier.  :D   4cyl IFS calipers will fit.  Mostly used as they are what's sitting around after the SA swap.

why are they the preffered choice for the swap if the v6 calipers are beefier wouldn't you want those

well, I have 4 cyl calipers for free, and that is cheaper than paying for 6 cyl ones... for me it all depends on what I can get cheapest still will still adequately do the job. I see no reason why not to run the 4 cyl ones.

yeah thats true why pay more if you dont have and to and they do the same job.  now whats the deal on the factory brakes other than theyre not safe and can posssibly warp but they would stop the truck right it would just take a little more to stop

well, I for one am tired of warped rotors. Plus I am currently upgrading my trucks braking system, and since I have free calipers and I am rebuilding my knuckles again soon, I decided why not.

stock brakes work fine to stop a stock vehicle.... you start adding weight like big tires and things of that nature, and it no longer stops like a stock vehicle....

Well... in the short year and a half or so I have had my truck running and driving, the rotors warped once and I turned them. Then they warped again, and that time I didn't care and decided not to turn them. That was about 6 months ago, so in a year they warped twice on me.

rotors that get turned have less material and will warp again faster than the first time

brakes on mini half ton trucks suck..... my ranger and explorer both warped the rotors.... my old toyota had warped rotors as does this one... its common when you subject vehicles to the kids of stress of real world driving.... i drive hard, and i know brakes are an expendable part

I'm in the same boat (warped rotors, need to do knuckle maintenance too).  I have a 1980 pick-up, but all the info i find says the vented rotors will work on 81-85 axles.  why not on 79-80?
