my. other. project.
« on: Jan 12, 2008, 08:57:23 PM »
This is what's been keeping me from my truck lately.  1987 KX125 that I picked up for free as a basketcase and blown up.  I've totally stripped it down, frame is in the shop for powdercoat (it's free  ) because the PO spraypainted it purple, cylinder was bored, and I'm getting ready to split the case and clean out the little chunks o' piston.

subframe:

I went through the swingarm, fully rebuilt/greased/polished:

engine:

PO gave the ports a little rubdown:

I ran the head through the dishwasher tonight, and then cleaned up the sealing surface with some 600 grit and carb cleaner.
before:

after:

Sweet, should have yourself a $700-800 bike when it's all done!  I might actually try parting out my cr85 real fast on ebay and snag an 96 cr125 that's for sale cheap locally.  With the lake so far down I think it'd be fun to take a couple/few bikes out on a patio boat and rip around the shoreline, maybe look for a spot with some exposed jumps and stuff :eyebrow:

Finally got to work on this thing again. I got the frame back from powdercoat a while back and got to start assembling it last night since I have to keep it at a friends house.

The upper triple clamp went into the dishwasher last night, that's why it's not on the bike.

No way man those bikes were evil! I actually had a chance to ride one of those and a YZ490.  I think my shorts still smell from the experience.

Lookin good duff   What color is the frame, light gray?

Would an 82 be a 480 or 450, or did the 450 die in 81?  te51levin has the old (late 80s era) honda master book with all the models and specs in it, up to 88 or 89 I think.  I know he spent a chunk on it, but it was fun to look at.

:yesnod:

IIRC from my wrenching days, the 450 was replaced with the 480 in 1982, and then it became the CR500 in 1984.

I got this pile together, at least enough to fire it. This was yesterday.

I put water in it and found out the hard way that the water pump seals were shot:

so apart it came and i put in new seals (that I had laying around anyway)

Back together and I fire it up...sounds good, feels good clank POP (power drops way down) oh :pokinit:...pow. and it dies...

I tried a ton of stuff, and finally thought maybe I sheared the woodruff key on the stator, because it started backfiring a little, but wouldn't run.So I spin the stator and oh :pokinit:...no compression.

The clutch-side wrist pin circlip popped out of its' groove after about 20-30 seconds of running. :rivers:

Of all the bikes I've worked on, torn down, built, whatever, I've never seen this happen, and I've never had it happen on a bike I put together ( i used to wrench on bikes for a living).  Oh well I guess.

Is it possible you didn't have it snapped completely into the groove?  How bad does the cylinder look?  There was something else in the water too... and it was distilled water I hope  :crossed:  Seen bikes suffer corrosion issues very quickly when friends were too cheap to buy distilled.

I'm sure that's what it was...it's just a first for me.  That was WaterWetter(the pink) and distilled water...mixed with the crankcase oil...mmm milkshake.

Bummer.  That's what I run in the street bike, distilled water with water wetter.  I should change it back probably, but you can't run antifreeze on the track.  If somebody goes down it'll make the track too slick, and it's a pita for them to wash off the track surface.
