over heating problems
« on: Apr 19, 2008, 07:21:16 PM »
ok when i rebuilt my 22re in my runner i put a radiator from a toyota with a v6.   before my engine was rebuilt i had over heating probems, but now i overheat really bad, much worse than before. maybe im dumb but i thought that bigger radiator with more coolent would result in a cooler engine.   i have flushed my radiator numerous times but once i get on a trail my temp spikes.  i have a huge electric fan that runs at 6000 rpm and is on a switch so when i get on the trail i turn the switch on so its running at all times.  as a result of the overheating problems I blow my ecu fuse. Yea i have worked with this problem for a while and the last time it overheated it shorted out my computer and harness so im working on getting that back together now.   If any one has any information or has an idea of something im not doing right or not noticing please let me know.

and i have replaced the thermostat so i know that works  and same with the heater core.

the truck will only over heat when im wheeling at high elevation but down in choke cherry canyon in farmington, new mexico i push my truck a lot harder than when im on a mountain trail. The elevation difference is pretty significant, a few thousand feet at least

i drive it daily and have no problems at all in regular driving

sounds more like a bad  water pump  or a very lean  fuel air mix

the  higher altitude makes it even leaner

search for Mass air flow Sensor  ,  MAF modification,

See the running lean problem has crossed my mind before and i have messed with the mass air flow sensor and its clean and seems to work fine.   The truck runs rich in town and when i get on a trail it thends to runs rich too   but i do understand that a lean running engine will have a possiblity of over heating.. Even before i rebuilt the engine it ran rich as :pokinit:.  i have gone through and checked every thing from wiring to a simple tune up.    i have replace the throttle position sensor if that has anything to do with it.    Also when i rebuilt the engine i didnt replace the water pump cause it spun fine and didnt lock up.  Maybe it took a  :pokinit: from then to now   idk lol    well thanks for the help guys

Did you look at the water pump?  I actually had one on a 22r that the propeller blades had corroded almost completely away and it wasn't pumping anything.  Check your timing too.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

Higher altitude will make you run RICH, not LEAN. Is all the air out of the system?

if I recall, too much initial advance or total advance can make the engine run hotter than it should.
