w56b tranny with w56c tailhousing...questions...
« on: May 20, 2008, 01:36:27 AM »
Hi all, I have a thread running looking in advice in the 85-95 forums on this too, but it seems like this is where I should have posted to begin with. To make a long story short, I have a w56b I got on Craigslist, and I own a w56c thats blown. Was under the impression that if I wanted to keep forward shift, all I needed to do was swap the tailhousings ( see here:) http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=14227.msg570766#msg570766

So, we swapped the housings and like idiots  :hammerhead: installed the tranny back in the truck WITHOUT checking to see if it would even shift through all the gears.  Case in point; it wont shift into 1st, 3rd, or 5th. Now, a couple of days later, and after a lot of hunting forums online, I think I realized our problem  :smack:, which was PLAINLY stated in the thread I linked to above. Use the C shift parts with the C housing and B with the B. So, were we supposed to swap all the shifter rods and forks as well?? Any insight would be helpful!!!!

Thanks everyone.

Gotta post it here too!

Update: We got it running! Turned out that we had used the wrong shift selector lever after all. It was about an inch longer, which is why we couldnt get it into the top gears. After much blood, sweat and tears, she went for her first functional drive in about a year. Damn it was a good feeling too! Thanks everyone for your advice and insight... Its very appreciated.
