3 link VS. 4 link
« on: Apr 19, 2008, 02:05:03 PM »
In the process of building and i want to know the pro's and con's of both 3 link or 4 link.  Which is more flexy that sort of stuff, some pics of built rigs would sure help too.

You're not giving us much to go on...

4 link controls the axle best but won't work with a drag link style steering system.  Full hydro is needed.  That is why many rigs go with 3 link and panhard bar in the front.   :twocents:

Why wouldnt a 4 link work with a draglink type steering system? Jeeps, dodges, and I'm shure others have 4 link front suspension systems with draglinks connecting the steering.

4links are just better imo becouse:
Better axle controll through the suspensions movement.
 No panhard bar to setup
There are 2 upper joints to take on the stress from torque, and the suspensions movements, rather than one

Ok the before mentioned jeep, and dodge setups arent triangulated 4 link setups. Non triangulated 4 links require a panhard bar to controll the axles side to side movement.

Triangulated 4links do not require a panhard bar if setup properly.

I just had to make myself a bit more clear.

Right, the panhard bar and drag link mimic each other in arc so there is no bumpsteer.  If a draglink is used with a triangulated 4 link the bumpsteer and roll steer is so bad that said vehicle is undriveable.

Also 3 link works good with oil pan clearance. Thats why people run those too. I think 4 link is better IMO.

I first thought is i will setup the rear first and see how it does, i have the 56 inch leafs from all pro and the longer 5in lift leafs in the front.  I will then link the front after the rear.  i want to run 37's or 39's and be able to flex very well.  I have another question though?  Would it be overkill if i put hiems on both ends of the links or can i get away with johnny joints on one end?  Personally i like the 4 link setup better, looks more solid and it seems you more of that setup out on the trail.  I come from a land of jeeps so i have to have my toyota out preform those jeepers :)  Thanks for the info so far, and anything info helps.
