my 3rd case was the nonfused type like glen mentioned, I'm running dual ultimates in my crawler, and pulled out a t-case for my 4runner so i could have 2 wheeling rigs  since i gutted my 79 and built my 85 extracab

I SAY..... go with a 4.7 3rd case...... ITS worth it.....then you dont have to decide....
and DONT WORRY ABOUT TWINS..... as you would have the option of 2.28 2wd   4.7 2wd or 10.72 2wd....... dont need any lower then that in 2wd.... setup the rear cases interlock pins for twins...and if you HAVE to....you can FIND 2wd mega low....
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

I'm sold on autos....but if I had a manual, I would love to have a triple case with factory 2.28 in all 3. The set-up is likely to be the quietest that way and the front/rear driveshafts may be very close in length....and certainly with some long spline slips, I bet the front DS could be moved to the rear in an emergency.

thats how my 79 was, both shafts were close enough that i could use the front on the rear in an emergence

ok i added a poll

Thanks Glen. Can you " add" more options...I like options, thats why I voted 3cases. If thats not enough gears will follow, along with a twin stick.

:psss: add is spelled with 2 Ds not one.

get a  case from a L43  it  doesnt have the "fuse"  part in the input  and  is  21 spline

I may have one more of them around here somewhere, or at my buddies, I'm gonna have a look.

Good thinking!

boggerunner, What was your wheel base in the 79?
