making a spare driveline
« on: Mar 20, 2012, 09:35:11 AM »
i need to make a 2nd d.l (a trail spare i can bend up/knock out of balance etc) and switch out to my good one to drive home. i have 3 ideas here. take my stock extra front d.l with completed ends, cut it in half and find slightly larger diam. tubing to make and  sleeve over both ends of front d.l to give me the length i need and weld it up? im not concerned about it being balanced. CHOICE 2 cut the cv off the front drive line and install my extra length tubing and re-weld cv on end? Choice 3 buy my tubing and just cut cv and u-joint end off front d.l and just weld ends on completely new pieced of .095-.12 inch thick tubing, ide like to go a little thicker than the .06 inch toyota makes stock but still want the tubing bend and be the week spot as im extended cab and cant keep my drive line off ledges or when going up step ups,

Choice 4  Go back to a two-piece shaft, Run a CV on the 2nd piece so you can tilt your pinion up to keep it out of the rock. Fab up a new mount for the center bearing and run either a pillow block bearing or get a billet aluminum bearing carrier from Hendrix Motorsports. You cut the bearing out of a stock Toyota center bearing.

I have a 90 ex-cab with a 123" WB. I went to a one piece d-shaft, after bending three of them I put some thought into it. I went back to the 2-piece with a pillow block bearing and have not bent one since.

Shot of the rear pinion angle and d-shaft.

hmm that looks doable,  my pinion is tilted up as much as it can  be ive got 5 inch sky springs front and chevys with 63s in rear with 3 inch blocks and dual cases, truck sits pretty tall and d.l about 7 inches shorter than stock. think the 2nd half of d.l (Axle to bearing) wouldnt be to steep of a angle and still be tucked up out of the way?

i think its 2" sch40 pipe fits inside the drive line snug enough to use for trail. i think i wrapped the pipe with tape to snug it up a little

You guys do know that when you come down on a d-shaft it is not only hard on the shaft it is also hard on the t-case and the diff.
