FJ40 with Toy box won't stay in 2nd gear...
« on: Mar 24, 2008, 04:49:23 PM »
Installed a MC Toy box in our '76 FJ40, and at the same time swapped in a used '83 4-speed tranny, which now won't stay in 2nd gear, whether in 2WD or 4WD.  The problem is worse in cold weather and worse going downhill.  (Is that weird or what??  The pitfalls of untested used parts. :hammerhead:)  Is this likely just a worn shift fork or weak detent spring problem?  The tranny is currently out and there are no obviously bad gears etc.  Any suggestions appreciated, thanks in advance...

Did you change the detent spring.  Also did you built the toybox.  I would try a new heavy duty detent spring and see what happens.  My toybox has never popped out even under extreme stress.
