89 22re vs 85 22re
« on: Mar 07, 2008, 12:28:48 PM »
Ok guys finally got a fairly new engine for my trk cheep instead of having to build my other up for about triple the money.  But the new/used one is an 89 22re and my trk is an 85.
The 89 is complete with all the accessories except the tranny

I have asked around and some say I have to change everything and others tell me to just change the efi system.  Some said I should have got the wiring harness and computer too and swapped all that out too.

I need some help here as I am not very up on what needs to be changed and what doesn't :dunno:  and am having a real hard time trying to figure out how to get it all back together :headscratch:

As long as both are EFI i think they're pretty much the same.

Take a look at the plugs on the TPS and AFM, i did a swap and they were the same units but had different-shaped plugs...PITA.

Also, the 85 might have had a resistor pack for the injectors, where the 89 probably doesn't. (aluminum finned metal block on passenger fender near windshield-wiper motor). If so, you'd need to use the right injectors, i think. A customer of mine also said they changed the plugs on the injectors somewhere along there, so look at that too. Other than that they're the same motors.

And i've taken plenty of pics if you need any for reference. Plus i've got EFI intakes laying all over if you need parts.  :flamer:

A lot of the electronics and vacuum hoses are different.  I would take all of the stuff from the top of the 85 motor and put it on the 89 so it al plugs in correctly.

Here is a link to a recent thread on efi year swaps.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

This is pretty much what I did with my swap to eliminate any wiring or vacuum problems. Worked great for me! Anything that is different, swap over. Thats the way I did it. Good luck!

So I was right about all of the EFI having to be swapped out.  I guess on the other stuff I will just have to wing it.   Thanks
