« on: Feb 27, 2008, 10:56:01 AM »
OK this is what i got.. fj80 mc installed.. jf60 rotors not on yet. 90 something ifs truck calipers.  i need to finish this over the weekend because it's my work truck. what other parts / tools / stuff do i need.  to finish the job?  wheel bearing grease.. big hammer and punch.  big socket?  any idea's advice would be a big help.

Not really anything else needed other than brake fluid.  Its a simple swap to do.

EDIT:  You might have to grind the caliper down a bit to clear the wheels.

OK I'll bring my grinder home. i was thinking i might have to grind or cut some of the baking plate too. i don't have a press at home so i was just going to use a 2 lb hammer and punch to remove & install the wheel studs.. think it well work?  the axle is an 83. plus do i need a thin wall socket for the 54mm nuts?

I use an old chrome lugnut threaded about halfway down the stud to remove them.  Then I use an impact to pull them back in with a old lugnut turned backwards with a washer under it.

I cut my backing plates down to nothing so I didnt have any fitment issues.  Ive heard that you will need to trim it though. Dont need a thinwall socket, a standard one will do nicely.

old lug nuts and an impact wrench sounds like the hot set up. i guess once i get it down that far i should be able to remove and cut the backing plate until theres only the brake line support left.

You can drill the spot welds that hold the brake line bracket and just bolt that on with the caliper bolts..

brake line bracket spot welds drilled out pretty clean. hard parts going to be trimming the backing plate.

OK got it done in time to drive to work. brakes work much better already. going to do the final bleed tonight. both wheel bearing were loose.. finger tight , with slop. so I'll be into those later. didn't have the stuff to do a rolling torque. just snugged the inner nut about 30 ft lbs so the wheel had just a slight drag.. then tightened and locked the outer nut. no slop and the hub was still cool after driving to work.

So I'm confused, I thought with vented rotors you had to use wheel spacers? This looks way easyer than what I've read.
rn37dd, it look very clean. Nice job.

no my wheels bolted right on. but i do have a set of Toyota wheels that would need wheel spacers. but they would need spacers even with old brakes. these are 87 fj60 rotors. i freaked when i bought them and they heard you had to use fj40 rotors. but as it turns out the 81 and newer rotors fj40/ fj60 are the same. i may go to spacers when i do the 90's truck rear axle to keep them the same. thanks for all the help.
