93 4x4 rear ale question
« on: Feb 27, 2008, 10:47:29 PM »
Im trying to replace the lug studs on a 93 rear axle and I got the axle out and the drum off but I cannot get the axle shaft out of the drum assembly. I already removed snap ring and tried beating the axle shaft out with no luck. Does anyone have any advice? can I just slip the new studs in through the back then set them when I put on the tire? Please any advice would be great I would love to finish this thing.

You don't need to pull the shaft out to get the studs out.  There is just enough room to get the studs out and back in if you rotate the shaft as you pull it out/put a new one in by the wheel cylinder.

and  to  "pull" the lug into the hub  just put a large nut  and a washer  under the lug nut and  torque till it  sucks it all the way  in

or  do it my way,  but i wouldnt unless you have new seals and  new bearings

That is a real iffy way to put them back in (yes I use to do it). It streches the lug stud making them more prone to break.

Stretches the lugstud? :shake:

If that is the case then you'd better not tighten your lugnuts...  :slap:

There is a big difference in the stress between pulling something through an interference fit and torquing a stud that is already in place to 90 ft. lbs. Do it how you want, but it is not recommend. Lug studs are designed to be pressed in from the back.

It doesn't even take half of that to install one so how could it be damaging the stud...?

I have had some that went in easy, some that it took everything my impact wrench had to pull them in.

Since I have a 20-ton press I use it.

You do it your way, I will do it mine, to each his own.

I agree with OOPs .....it takes a lot more than 90ft lbs to pull some of those press fit studs in...

Hmmm, I wonder if it has to do with the brand of the studs.

Could be, I really have no idea. I do remember when I was putting in a bunch of new OEM's they were real tight going. I was trying to knock them in from the back with a four pound hammer and a big drift and I had a heck of a time getting the first one in. Went to a friends house and used his press, they went in but the press had to work at it. One set of Dormans went it easy, the next set my press had to work at it. Quality control, maybe!!!!

Hey all thanks for the input I might as well just press them in and put in new bearings. After all I am planning on keeping this thing for a while. Thanks again
