Car Audio Opinions: 10 inch subs
« on: Feb 03, 2008, 07:29:28 AM »
I am having a dilemma...don't know which to buy.  I need to pick up a 10 inch sub.  The enclosure is approx. 0.90 ft^3 without the speaker installed and I have about a 5 inch max mounting depth.  Here are the subs I am debating over, anyone ever used any of these, have opinions?  Anything better you want to suggest?

Image Dynamics IDQ10V2 D4
JL Audio 10W1
Memphis 15-MS104
Elemental Designs 11kv.2

I cannot for the life of me just pick one and order it.  Keep going back and forth.  Any info would be appreciated!

Oh yeah, 300W Memphis amp.  They are usually underrated so may push more than that.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

each of those subs should have recommended air space volumes for each speaker.....see what yours is then get the closest one.....thats what I would do

for instance, here is the JL http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/10W1_BDS.pdf

With the sub installed, each of these subs should be within the recommended enclosure size range in this box.  That is one reason I picked them.

They all fit the bill for the installation, my question is which sub is going to perform better.  I usually listen to rock/metal, more interested in SQ than teh boom boom but I would like something that will hit pretty good when asked.

the JL is they way to go! in the right box they sound awsome  i had some 12wo's and when we put them in the right box the SQ and DB were awsome  i was more for the DB thats why i went with the 12's  but 10's are def SQ all the way with a lil boom boom  best for metal, rock and  :nerv: country. Also with any speaker in the right enclosure it dose not matter if you under power or over power  its gonna sound great.

This isn't on your list but the mounting depth is only 3" & will handle the watts your amp will put out. Your box is pefrect size for the 12". I'm going to run a 12" in my 4Runner.

10"

I cant put any info on this my choices is always,
Rockford Fosgate-   look up on ebay a p1s4, p2s4
Im currently running 2 p215s with 1000 watts and its redicolous.
But the p1s are a single voice coil and low watts+ under 80 shipped on ebay
Not being rude but Crutchfiels SUCKS there prices are way way to much,
You can get the same stuff on ebay for near 1/2 price.
Thats my opinion.

I have an alpine in the 4Runner and it is alright.  I won't be ordering anything from Crutchfield...to much $$ unless they have a special deal on something.

I am probably down to either the JL or the ID and leaning to JL cause of the price.  The ID is about 40 bucks more, but from what I have read the clarity and response of the ID is second to none.

check www.millionbuy.com for great prices and selection.  I'm running a single 10" 800 watt Kenwood with a 920 watt Kenwood amp for a total investment, including the box and install parts, of well under $300.

Memphis all the way!

Memphis has got to be one of the best subs ive ever heard. I heard 2 10" memphis 500 watt max each in a ported 1.5 cubic foot box and it hit wayyyy harder then my buddys two 18" MTX subs in a big box and like 1800 watts. Oh yeah it was only a 500 watt max single channel amp pushing those two 10's

The car that had the two subs in it has won many competitions with them too.
RIP Kyota.... you are the man

10s should always hit harder than 18s if they are both quality items.  Larger cones equals better response at lower frequency and generally a smoother sound.  The simple physics is that larger cones cannot move as fast for the big punch.

I have the 12" version  of this in my 91 standard cab, hits so hard all my mirrors move outside. The ten hits hard to and they also make a box pre-made for these subs. Enough room with the twelve to put the bench all the way back still so i can fit being 6'4".

edit: I use a 300w alpine amp for the twelve, it can go up to 475 i believe.

Thanks for the infos everyone.  I will give you all a look at the whole install when it is done.  The box is about half way there, I finished the fiberglass layup this afternoon before the Super Bowl.  HOW BOUT MY GIANTS!

Please feel free to continue offering opinions, I haven't made any purchase yet!
