rear drivline help
« on: Feb 27, 2008, 09:24:55 AM »
i just put in my dual cases and my driveline for the rear is too long.  i was just wondering if anyone has shortened a driveline themselves or if i'm crazy for even thinking about it.  i drive my truck to the trail, so it has to be able to go down the freeway.  was thinking maybe i could shorten it, and take it in to get it balanced.  i just don't know how hard it is to actually get it straight.  anyways, advice and pics if anyone has done it would be great.  thanks

money pretty tight for me right now.  thats the only reason why i'm even thinking about doing it myself.  i cruze around 65-70 on the highway so i need to make sure its not going to tear apart my drivetrain if i do it myself.

If money is tight just get it shortened at a shop.  Find a ag/tractor shop.  They will shorten it for about $35 and it'll run true if they get it straight.  Balance isnt a biggy, it just masks a bad driveline IMO.

hmm... never thought about doing it that way.  is it basically a chance thing if they get it straight or not?  or do they actually have some kind of a jig that they set it on to check?  thanks for the reply

That was my problem....there isnt a shop around here for 500 miles that I would trust dropping off my shaft with

if thats the case, i'll probably just try doing it my self.  i'll try calling some of the local shops around here and see how acurate they can be with it and see what they say.

You can use a skinny wheel and cut just behind the weld to get the tube off of the yoke.  Then clean up the weld area and cut the tube straight and slide it back on.  Make sure you have the phasing right and that is relatively true.  You can put some atf or lead shot in there to help with vibrations aswell.

hey glen, i was just reading up on the pirate forum on one that someone did.  they cut towards the middle of the driveline.  my guess would be to do it toward one of the ends.  do you have any pics of yours?

should i stick the barrel of my 870 down there and blast away?  just kidding.  i've heard of doing that.  does it really work?  wouldn't it make a bunch of noise going down the road?

does the tube actually run inside the driveline?  that would probably be the best way of getting it to line up straight.  i have a cv out of an 85 that i was wanting to put in.  you think it would be to hard to line it up straight?

thanks for the replies guys.  i'm getting confident that i can do this now  :gap:

:slap:  DONT DO THAT  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=42937.0;attach=95200;image

cut the weld on one end  that holds it to the yoke,  mark it  and cut  and  tap the yoke back into the tube ,  like WT  said above,

well, i havn't cut my driveline up yet, but i got the cv ready to go(i think) cut it as straight as i could with a chop saw.  now tomorrow at work maybe i can squeez in a little fab work when i have extra time and finish it up.  oh yea, i forgot to ask, how should i mount the cv so that it is as straight as possible?

hey whats up danny!  havn't talked to you in a while.  all i have left to do now is cut out the floor, put in the second shifter and drive it around to see how the driveline is and i'm ready to go.  should be done tomorrow.  just havn't had a whole lot of time lately.
hollister sounds like fun.  let me know the exact date on when you guys are planning on going.  i'm bulding up niccole's truck right now too.  hopefully it'l be ready by then too.  just moved the front axle forwd 6 1/2 inches.  it's turning out pretty nice.  keep in touch

well, just put my driveline in the truck, lifted the back tires off the ground and spun it, and go figure, it looks like a freaking banana!  i give up.  i spent like an hour trying to get it straight before welding it and it didn't work.  i guess i'll just call a shop tomorrow.
