22R TO 22RE
« on: Dec 06, 2007, 02:50:07 PM »
My buddy has a 22r in his 84 and wants to make it EFI. I just so happen to have a donor 4 runner that has all the EFI stuff, Wireing, computer, intake. Is this a doable swap?? Can he keep his 22r head or would he have to use the head off the 22re?? Have any of you done this swap before?? If so was it worth it??

Thanks a ton guys

Damn dude there is a million threads on this question. But just to give some input and not look like a total ass hole... the 22r block in 84 is weird not alot for it. The 20r head wont work, the 22re head i have heard will work but you have to do some drilling and tapping to make it work... other guys say it wont work at all because of the old 22r head is taller then the 22re and there is timing chain issues and so on.  I'm sure guys will tune in and give you more details. I'll see if i can find you some info also.

I've done the 22R to 22RE swap.  My 84 4Runner had a blown up 22R.  I bought a salvaged titled 85 4Runner with a blown up 22RE for $375.  I bought a rebuilt short block and took everything I needed from the 85 and swapped it into my 84.  A friend of mine gave me a 22RE head that I cleaned up (media blasted), 3-angle valve job, and machined 20 thousands off to clean it up.

I took the entire wiring harness (both engine and dash harnesses), the EFI fuel lines, EFI fuel tank and pump, EFI ECU, and all the EFI stuff under the hood.  I had to drill a 2" hole on the passenger side firewall to pass the engine wiring harness to the computer.  I sent the fuel injectors off to get professionally cleaned (witchhunter performance).  I cleaned every single EFI part by hand and ran every single bolt over the wire wheel on my bench grinder.  It took me several months to complete but totally worth it.

Living at higher attitudes and driving some really high mountain passes with a carb sucked.  I also needed my 4Runner to run at any angle since I was building it up to be a rock crawler.

Let me know if you have any questions about the swap.

Here's my buildup thread

what was the build date of the 84 22r? there are actually 2 22r motors... the later one usually found in 85+ are the same as teh 22re and will direct swap everything... the earlier ones, wont.. it can be done, but it would require a setup off of a 22re from a celica that was around before the new stuff kicked in with the truck 22re
