toyota pops outa first?!?
« on: Jan 02, 2008, 12:33:35 PM »
I have a 90 4x4 toyota pickup and it pops outa first gear when you are on the gas unless you hold pressure on the shifter. Im guess something is worn out, dont really know maybe a sincro. I really have no idea i dont know anything about trannys. My question, is this something hard to fix or should i just buy a new tranny. its got a bout 200000 miles maybe a little more on it. Also were can i find the used trannys that are shipped over from japan?

If you're mechanical, marlin sells a rebuild kit  (get the heavy duty if it's a W56)

First thing I would do is to check the shifter seat.

Heavy Duty Shifter Seat

It's common for the factory shifter seat to wear, crumble and disintegrate over time. This often results in a sloppy or loose transmission shifter. The factory seat is soft so it can be squeezed into position. We took a different approach, and machined groves into the sides of our heavy duty seats. Instead of squeezing the seat into place, the groves on each side allow ours to rotate into position. This allows us to make our seat from stronger, longer lasting hardened urethane. Our new heavy duty seats will far out last the stock units and will reduce shifter slop. Please state year and model when ordering. Two different sizes, one sizes fits W56A and W56B models, the other fits all other 4wd applications as well as all Toyota Celicas and Supras.

I had the exact same problem last summer and was sure I needed a new tranny. However, it was just the shifter seat, which had disintegrated like the one in the picture .

To check to see if this is your problem you need to remove the 4 bolts around the shift lever boot, then there is another rubber boot underneath held on with 4 screws. I also unbolted the tower assembly from the top of the transmission. Then, once out there was a spring loaded cap assembly that had to be pressed down and turned clockwise to be unlocked so that the entire shift lever could be lifted out.

The shifter seat is what holds the shift lever in place at its base and allows it to move up and down and side to side like a ball in a socket. Mine was totally disintegrated and caused my transmission to slip out of gear, usually first, and fifth. The piece shown cost less than $20, and works great. Hopefully this is your problem, because disassembly of the shift lever tower is a pain, unfortunately.
