bench seat for the bed?
« on: Sep 22, 2007, 04:36:49 PM »
I have an 85 extra cab pickup with bucket seats and I wish I could carry more people. Since you all know there is no room for seats in the extra cab I was wondering if there was any legal way of mounting a seat and seat belts in the bed? I wanna make it quick release so I can pull it out when i put my dirt bike in but I also want it to be legal?

seatbelts and some kind of head protection are required so you would need to make a roll bar.

This also varies from state to state. FL has no limitations on passengers in the bed. But, Red has stated the common sense basics.

ask your local DMV or ask the 5-0 and get it from them, so if you get pulled over by them you can say that this is what officer so and so told me was legal

"well im not officer so and so."  I tried that once for a different thing.  It helps when you remember officer so and so's name tho.  I tried again using his name and it still didnt work tho.

Your best bet will be to go to your local dmv and get the requirements/restrictions in writing. Then make sure that you have it in your vehicle, in case any officer wants to question it.

you can have more seats, in the bed... dont know how you would make it quick release, safely though, but 4 bolts isnt that hard to undo....

you would need seatbelts for sure

Look at The Macho Taco, he cut the rear of the cab out and make room for an extra seat. If you did this you could recess the seat maybe 12" back and you'd basically be sitting in the extra cab.

If this is a DD you could do a double cab conversion?   depends on how much fab skills you have. Anything is possible.

if you want a quick release seat get the 3rd row seat (and its anchor points) from an 80's or 90's era chevy/gmc suburban. or the back seat from a full size blazer/jimmy. its the same seat. the seat will be too wide for your application, but you can use the mounting hardware.

If you can find a set of the old rocket seats from a Subaru Brat you can mount them a few inches apart so the front wheel of your dirtbike will still fit between them for goin' riding.

This has got be thinking (OUCH!)   :)

Has anyone ever fab'd a back seat that can roll forward, similar to something you would see in a Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, Jimmy or Bronco. You know what i'm talking about?

it folds forward and against the front seats, that would be pretty neat in a Toyota.

the back seats in the 1st gen 4runner's are the same way once you pull the headrest out. wouldnt be as easy to make in the bed of a pickup though because you would have to lower part of the bed so the upper part of the seat could fold down into it to make it flat.

My '90 dodge ramcharger rear seat rolled forward on hinges at the front  It didn't really recess into the foot well all  that much either.

You can also cut the anchor points out of an old dodge caravan.  They're recessed cups with a bar in them, the seats clamp onto the bars.  30 sec. and the seat is out  The middle seat of the van would also prolly be about the right size for a toy bed as well.
