I need a little help please
« on: Sep 02, 2007, 06:37:16 PM »
I have a pond by my house that has about 2 feet of water in it that I have drived threw 100 times and never had a problem. I took a friend for a ride in my toyota and I was going to take him threw the pond. When we got about half way threw it my front end dropped about another 2 feet and drrowned my engine. I gues somone went threw there and made a big hole for me. Anyway I pulled in out and home, took out all the plugs and turned it over about 20-30 times to blow out all the water and changed the oil several times. It runs like crap, it misses realy bad. I shot so carb/choke cleaner into the vacum ports on the trottle body and it ran great, nice and smooth. When I stop it runs like crap again. I guess its not getting enough fuel. Any suggestions on what it might be?

Thanks Alot

Rick

Cleaned that also. I am 100% positive that it is lack of fuel because I can spray the carb cleaner into the trottle body vacume port and it runs nice and smooth.

I also forgot to add that it always runs good at Wide open throttle.

I just looked at the book and found out what it is. Can I test it without just going out a buying one and if I need one does anyone have any idea how much one might cost?

How is the fuel? Is there any water in it?

Before you buy another MAF , take the cover off and make sure it is good and dry. use a hair drier to dry it out without getting it to hot then try it again.  Any water in any of the electrial will short out or cause a low resistance value and cause problems.

I don't think water would be in the fuel because it was only the front engine that got in the water, the back of the truck didn't get submerged. I'll try  the MAF in the morning.  Thanks for the help, I'll let you all know if it works or not.

The MAF is not bad, it still runs great when I spray carb/choke cleaner in the trottle body while pumping the throttle.

That is exactly why the MAF may be a problem. It controls the amount of fuel that is going into the engine. If it is not working properly it may only idle and not be correctly sensing the air flow to increase the fuel rate as you rev the engine.

By you spraying carb cleaner in the intake you are adding the extra fuel needed that the fuel system is not.

I tested the MAF and its not bad, I took everything apart all the way to the injectors and cleaned it all up really good and then put it all back together. The fuel rail and injectors were pretty dirty for any having about 700 or 800 miles on the new engine. When I put it all back together it took a few minutes to get it started because there was no fuel in the fuel rail and stuff but when it started it ran great, nice and smooth for a couple of minutes then started running like crap again. Same thing as before. I am starting to get pissed off and I am about ready to take it to the shop if I can figure somthing out soon. I am going to put a fuel filter on it and drain all the gas and look into cleaning the tank and stuff first though. Are there any other sencers that might affect the way it runs after it runs for a couple of minutes?

Thanks

can't recall what the sensor is called but its located at the air intake box at the top. A thin later of plastic holds it in place. Pull that out and verify there isn't any water in there.. if there is it'll run like crap.

make sure you didn't blow any fuses either.

Yeah, if sucks in water. Usually won't bend anything but can make it jump sometimes. Worth a shot

A couple simple sometimes overlooked items, did you get a new air filter, is the charcoal canister full of water?

New air filter yes, Didn't look at the charcoal canister. If it is full of water can I blow it out with an air compressor?

Are you sure the motor is running on all 4 cyl? Have you compression test all 4 cyl? Pull one spark plug wire at a time from the distu, listening for a change in the idle. Also measure the resistance on all the injectors due to them being under water.
