Timing cover Q's
« on: Aug 15, 2007, 11:20:13 PM »
did my chain, sprockets, guides, and tensioner, and when i was torquing down the 10mm cover bolts i broke two in half.  haynes manual says to torque to 29 foot lbs, and to torque the 8mm bolts to 9 foot lbs.  Is the 29 number right?  any help there would be great, and can i just pick up a "bolt kit" at napa or the dealership and replace all the cover bolts?

Im also looking for a diagram of how all of the accesories and brackets attach to the front of the block, as i dont know where it all goes exactly. Motor is a 85 22r in a 84 runner.

29ftlbs and 9 ftllbs is what my 86 manual says too........

BTW, a 10mm bolt shouldn't break at 29ftlbs

yea im guessing the stock bolts have been heated and cooled a few too many times, cause the 10mm bolts didnt even get to 29 ft lbs, i bet they broke around 20 or 25.  Now i just need to find a bolt kit. any ideas?

I would go to my local toyota dealer for stuff like that.  I know they will fit, be the right length, and are of good quality.    :twocents:

If you want I'll check my FSM when I get home for the torqe.  84 22r.

When was the last time you had your torque wrench calibrated? Did you clean the threads on the bolt and the hole? Were you using any liquid when you put them back in (locktite, oil, any oil residue on the bolt) liquid cuts your torque in half. EX: When you have oil on a bolt (or in the hole), when you get to 35lbs, you are really at 70lbs.

NAPA does not make any type of bolt kit, for any engine. Go to toyota and get the right bolts.

went to the dealer today and ordered all the bolts that i broke and few spares, i cleaned the bolt holes and bolts with brake kleen so they were as clean as they were getting.  i think im set as for as putting the timing cover and assembly back together.  Only prob now is i pulled the smog pump, alternator, power steering pump, alternator and all that jazz off and this was last week, now im not sure how it all goes back, i know where they go but there is a alot of bracketry and some of it holds the timing cover down. i have an idea but im not sure, any one have a diagram for this??

I had a similar problem.I stripped one thread and I only got to about 15lbs.I just used a ratchet and judged it as best as possible. No leaks so far.
