86 yota SAS advice wanted
« on: Jul 07, 2007, 06:39:57 PM »
I have an 86 toyota ex cab short bed I just bought.  I want to do the SAS switch as quicly as possibly and hoping to get some advice from somebody who has already done it.  I'm in the Marines and do not have a ton of time on my hands to be working on my rig, I'm honestly  not sure if this project is a reasonable project for a weekend or maybe two.  I grew up in northern California and now live on camp lejeune, NC, I'm not too sure on the shops in that area, is this a project that I can take up on my own with limited time?  I'm fairly mechanically enclined but have never tackled something this big.  Any advice on this subject would be appreciated, and if anybody knows any good shops in the North Carolina area that would be great as well... thanks for the help.   thebigsib20@aol.com

Honestly i've heard of it taking anywhere from 5hrs to 2weeks to complete. It all depends on what kind of tools you have available and what level your skills are at. Sorry to break it to ya but with what your saying it sounds like it might be too big of a job for short time/ experience. Do you even have all the gear set and ready to be welded up. "SAS kit"?
Starting from scratch again...

well to be honest I just bought the rig a few days back, but I used to have an 85 and of course it was solid front axle.  I have access to every tool imaginable so that's not an issue.  I'm leaning towards buying the sas kit from marlin, and I just found an axle off an 85 for 250 i'm going to pick up, that's where i'm at right now.  It's just tough because when you are at home you know who you can trust to work on your truck, but being across the nation, I don't know anybody and it's hard to just trust somebody with this. also I'm wanting advice on what size lift I should do with it, i'm thinking 5 inches, maybe 6, i know i want atleast 33x12.50's... maybe 35's

I just finished putting a 4 inch marlin front sas on my 86 4 runner.   I put the marlin long travel springs, 5 inch on the rear.  I just bought and put on 35 toyo mts....and I will be honest, all my buddies are in love with my truck.  It sits very  nice over the 35's.  The swap wasn't too bad, just time consuming.  I buckled down on it and it took about 3 days total time.  But i also did a shock triangulation, gears, and a new steering box.  Good luck with it.  I'll try and put a pic on here.

Mmmmmmmmmm

Another thing to consider with doing a SAS, is you don't have to do it all at one time.  You can weld/have someone weld on the front hanger, and also cut the holes and weld in the sleeves for the front spring shackles before you else.  This won't affect the driveablility of your vehicle, so you can do that one weekend, and then do the actual swap the next weekend, without loosing the use of the truck in the mean time

Sas is the way to go, it's fairly simple. The hardest part is hacking all of the ifs stuff out from under your truck.

not sure if it was mentioned here or not yet, but you can do some of hte fabbing while still driving the truck, like the front hanger, and the frame tubes

The SAS conversion is really straight forward if you tackle it correctly, you can easily do it over a course of time while your still driving the vehicle. I would recommend that you run sky's hanger. It actually bolts on, then you weld it on which makes it pretty straight forward and hard to screw up. You can actaully do all of this while your still driving the truck, the only hard part is the steering box. You have to change the steering box mount, which really isn't that big of a deal. I would recommend a sandwhich style box mount, like the one marlin sells, move your steering box as far forward as possible. If you have any questions feel free to ask. The solid axel conversion is actually very simple and straight forward.

I'll start a new thread and try to post lots of pics

Did you start on it yet ?
Are you going with a whole kit ?
What shock towers are you going with ? Hoop type or Ford? If it is the Ford shock tower I found out after that you do not need to cut off all the IFS stuff, you can use a little of it to mount the  ford towers on and give you some extra strength.
