New engine, New bug
« on: Jul 28, 2007, 09:04:51 AM »
I'm trying to work out a bug that just showed up a couple days ago on my new 22RE.

The engine runs great and now has about 500 miles on it, but, a couple days ago I was about 20 miles from home and while at a stop light I noticed that the engine idle was now about 2500 rpm.

This doesn't happen on shorter trips, but, this problem happend again yesterday after I had driven about 20 miles again.

The only way the idle will drop down, is if I shut the engine off, then restart it and then it is back to normal.

I also noticed that after driving 15 or 20 miles, this problem only arises if I hit half throttle or more and go over 3000 rpm. If I slowly go over 3000 rpm but barely have the throttle open, it doesn't seem to have a problem.

I can be going down the road and when I push in the clutch if I notice that the idle is now to high, I can shut the engine off for a second or two, turn the ignition switch back on and let out the clutch and all is normal again.

ANY IDEAS?

Thanks
Ken

Well I just got back home after experimenting and I some more information :hammer:

I pulled over to the side of the road, popped the hood and found that the T.B. isn't closing all of the way :smack:

Since it doesn't stick open until I get several miles from home, I can only think that the heat is causing the T.B. to bind or warp as it warms up.

I have also noticed that I can now jab the throttle real quick and it will now bring the idle back down. It wouldn't do this before, so maybe it is starting to clearance itself :dunno:

It is an LC T.B. so now I wonder if boring them out makes them prone to warpage. I torqued it down when I installed it and also used the new LC heat resistant gaskets that should reduce heat transfer. I need to look for the paperwork to find the torque spec's and try re-torquing the T.B..

Anybody else have problems with their T.B. warping or binding after getting warm?

One thing that has me puzzled. Why would my idle go back down when I shut the engine off and then restart it?

Thanks
Ken

Some engines, that have computers for engine control of fuel injection and spark..  they well reset idle parameters at start up.. therefor even if the throttle is open at bit they well restart at idle and seem to run almost normal. that might be why your restart goes back to normal idle.. I'm not 100 percent up to speed with your motor, so it may not be the case.. just something to ponder... good luck
