Coil Ground
« on: Apr 26, 2007, 04:27:12 PM »
Ok.....need some help.  Which wire is the ground for the coil????  My Chilton manual has all of 2 paragraphs regarding the coil, and the diagrams were from an earlier model of coil or something, sooo, any help will be appreciated.

if you are tapping in for a tachometer, i would jsut stick a male spade into the green plug that is exposed, that is the test connector for a tachometer and is wired for the negative coil side

the coil is grounded through the mount, but to hook up a tachometer you need the signal from the coils negative side..... it has nothing to do with the coil mounting.....

Im actually wiring in an ignition kill switch, dang, I thought it was probably grounded through the mount.  I guess tapping into the ground isn't an option anymore than.  I did unplug the red arrowed wire and it would crank and crank but wouldn't fire, but I wasnt sure if there was any problems with wiring a cutoff switch into that wire.  Any opinions on that?

But he's asking where it grounds not how to hook up a tach.  This has nothing to do with tachometers

Correct... from what i have heard, the simplest and safest way to create a kill switch is to interrupt the ground wire to the coil.  Since the entire body of the coil is grounded through the mount, that makes it a less than ideal way to rig up the switch as i would need to make rubber seperators for the whole bottom of the coil or something like that.  I'm sure that there are other ways to do this, like through the wire I mentioned above, but just wasn't sure if there could be any ill effects from cutting off the ignition in this way...  So does anyone know if that is a safe alternative, or what i could do otherwise? thanks

Well the ground is not what your looking for.

to be coreact the coil does not ground, if it did it would not work.

one side of the coil goes to power, and the other side goes to the brain box.

you could put a kill switch on eather side butt I would do it on the power side. :twocents:

ah ok, if it were for the tack, you could just use the open green plug..... it wasnt specified what it was for....

oh hell, put in a cutoff switch o nthe red wire.... if it wont start, theres no problem (thats what i would do, but what do i know ;) )
