OK, I know this may not sound like it, but I have an 86 and my charge light and brake lights were on for a long time and all checked out OK. Then one day I was running some wires for my fog lamps and next thing I knew they were out. Drove the truck all was fine, next day lights are on again. Now I started thinking WHY, so I started to look around under the hood where I ran the wires for the fog lights. I just started moving some of the wires around and the lights went out again. To make a long story short, one of the wires on the big black plug on the drivers side fenderwell had pulled out and was not making contact. Just pulled the rubber boot out of the back and pried the little tang on the terminal up and reset it so it was locked in place again and have not had a problem since.

thanks for the quik reply I will check it out when I get home  :crossed: Also when I check it with my volt meter it was only reading 12.4 @ the batt. so I checked it at the alt and it was only reading 12.4 aswell so either Kragens little tester is no good and my alt. is shot or I dont know what Im doing with a volt meter :shakehead:

I not sure if your alt has an external voltage regulator. It will be on the driver side fender.  :crossed:

Is that at idle, if so try bringing it up to 2000 rpm and see what you get also put a load on lights, heater, etc. Oh before I forget just check at the battery. If your battery has not gone dead I doubt its your alternator.

My experiance with this turned out to be the carb/emissions, it was running rich and the computer promps the charge/brake light combo as a primitave check engine light.  I spent alot of time and $$ swapping and testng alts.,and relays and regulaters all things electrical only to have a long time Toyota mechanic fix it by rebuilding the carb and replacing some vacume stuff.  He told me that even though it is carbed it still has a computer that detected the rich condition and triggered the lights.

so I guess kragens macine only tests at high rpm's not at idle. So I guess I do know how to read a volt/ohm meter it was the alt. and yes it is internally regulated. Thankx for everyones input. :clap2:  :driving:
