Electrical leaks?
« on: Mar 14, 2007, 07:50:42 PM »
Alrighty, It's an 89 PU, 22RE...been having a problem with it if I let it sit over 2 weeks, the battery is dead.  3 Year old Optima Red Top btw.  So I go through the fuse panel and probe for hot circuits with the keys off.  Only hot one is the STOP circuit which the hazards and brake lights feed off of.  Anyways, this circuit is always hot and I assume that is correct since hazards have to be functional w/o keys right.  Brake lights will illuminate with no keys and pedal depressed.  I'm thinking it's the battery itself.  I have 14.7 volts @ the Alternator hot lead.  14.26 volts @ the battery at idle.  14.22 Volts @ battery with headlights on to check the rectifier.  I got the battery bench tested @ the tech guy said it was rockin @ 800 cold crank amps.  Now, I got the battery out, and every day I'm putting a meter on it to watch it.  In one night I've went from 12.26 to 12.22 volts, but ya know, even temperature can effect the batt.  I'm looking for a drastic fall over a 2 week period so we'll see.  Anyone got any more ideas until I see what this battery does?  Thanks

This problem has been covered and this is how you find the drain.

you could also have a shorted cell in the battery

No, if he had a dead cell, he would only have 10v with the battery at rest.

Be carefull who you share your wife with, you may not get her back.

Ok back on topic.

A battery with a shorted sell or sells may still have good voltage short term, but will drain down over time. If you find the battery to be the problem you could pick it up and drop it from a 1" or two to knock the sediment off the bottom of the plates. This may improve the problem as the sediment builds up on the bottom and shorts out the cells.

If the test light comes on there is a draw. If it comes on and goes right out it does not meen there is a draw. There is just a clock circut or the electronics is charging a memory circut. This should not be enough to drain a good battery.

If you have a millamp amp meter you could use it in place of the test light to measure the amount of draw.
