81-82 EFI Conversion Problems
« on: Oct 01, 2006, 07:31:38 PM »
I was wondering if any body out there has tried this and had any problems. I had a worn out 22RE that burned a quart every 300 miles and did a rebuild on a 82 tall block. I bought all new toyota parts and put a crane cam in the 22R. The cam is rated to have more torque at 1400-4800 rpm. I also installed a header. I drilled and tapped holes for the EFI intake manifold to bolt on. It is sealed good. I used to get 22-23 mpg with the 22RE but after this rebuild I get 16-17 mpg. The horsepower gain was to a minimum. I am not sure what the problem is. I also have 5.29 and 33's and it should have a little more get up and go with the rebuild. The distributer is at 13-14 degrees advanced. Toyota mechanic helped. Anybody have suggestions?

hmm,  did you use a new o2 sensor??  sounds like  you did everything right,  and that mild a cam shouldnt effect the mileage

Duration Intake/Exhaust = 262/272
Duration at 0.050 Intake/Exhaust = 214/224
Lobe Separation = 110
Gross Lift = 416/430

It is the original O2 sensor. I am not sure it is the cam. It is a Crane Cam in the stock setting and the cam comes 5 degrees advanced. The valves where adjusted. I don't have an adjustable cam gear in it. I am in college now and when I go back home I will probably do a compression check. The engine has 1500 miles on it right now. I changed the oil at 500 miles. I don't think the ignition is to far advanced. It does run a little lumpy at idle.

if it was advanced too far  it would try to kick back when starting,  a new motor  is gonna  be kinda crappy on compression til  it gets run in

dont worry about the mileage,  thats about normal for  a lifted truck, give it time to get run in  and get a new o2 sensor
