Bigger diff armor really better?
« on: Mar 17, 2007, 09:58:16 PM »
Bigger does not always mean better.

It looks like the thinner armor(cheaper one) fits a bit more snug than the full on big piece.

Any feedback on this?  Is there any reason why the smaller one would be preferred?

If you're talking about the little half moon one, I'd rather have the full armor.  I've already dented my half moon and I don't wheel hard.  It's better than nothing and probably saved my gear but it also doesn't protect everything down there.

In areas where rust is a problem the bigger armor can hold mud and salt behind it and cause the housing to rust and leak.

Not if you paint the :pokinit: out of it.  Remove the little white insert on the spray can button insert the red stray you get from wd40.  Presto, paint in all the hard to get places.

i made my own half moon plates for both front and rear.  but they extend from the top to the bottom all the way.  most everyone knows how i drive and they haven't dented yet.  iamde them out of 1/4 inch.

I never dented my small armor in the front and I beat the :pokinit: out of it.  I also never even ran a rear guard and never really dented it either but I guess I dont go in reverse much.  Now im running one big solid piece of armor for the front thats a mix of 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" and I think ill be alright with it

CAN??  You can safely change that to WILL hold mud, sand, etc.

Isn't the *small* one made of out of the same thickness as the *big* one?    So as long as you hit a rock on the protected part, you're OK.  But don't hit a rock hard on the unprotected part as you'll put a dent into the housing, and if hard enough, out comes the oil.

I wear a full cover (pipe cap) and attempt to keep the sand/dirt out of it.  I don't worry about hitting rocks anymore.
