Rear Diff Gear Oil
« on: Jan 26, 2007, 09:45:07 AM »
OK, I saw this before and have searched for it but no luck. Need to know how much more gear oil to use when over filling rear diff to compensate for higher pinion angle. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yea, I know what the book says, 2.4 qts, but I need to know how much more to add when your pinion angle has changed and you have to over fill to compensate for that angle to keep from starving the outer pinion bearing?

get a pump and depending on how much your pinion changed...i'd say pump it up until it starts to gush out profusely...then hurry up and throw the cap back on :)

If your wondering how to get the full 2 quarts into the differential, park it with the rear tires on ramps or blocks or simply on a grade.  Be careful, however, I did this and managed to overfill it and it caused quite a mess while driving to Moab coming out the breather.  Stick with 2 quarts.

 :twocents:

How much did you rotate it?  If it is a trail rig it should be a huge issue, but I don't think adding additional fluid can compensate for angle on the highway.

I did not rotate at all, when I installed my rear springs and hangers (Frenched front) the pinion angle came out at about 20 degrees. The truck is also a DD.

It should be OK with the standard 2 quarts, but I'm no expert.  Do you have a picture to post?

dude, it doesn't look l ike that angle is too extreme at all from that angle. i don't think you'll have a problem getting 2 quarts in that thing

1/4 per 10 degrees.

1/4 what?  :headscratch:

The pinion angle looks to be as good or better than the majority of the rigs on planet earth.  Are you sure it is any different than stock?

I think the people that have bearing problems have the pinion pointed directly at the t-case.  If you are worried put some synthetic in it for added protection.

Honestly, I don't understand the concern, but maybe someone else knows more?  :dunno:
