taco axle question
« on: Feb 10, 2004, 06:37:30 PM »
I want to do a tacoma solid axle swap.  I want to use a rear tacoma axle in the front.  If you turn the axle around it will be runing in reverse due to the fact that the front and rear drive shafts are connected and turn in oposite directions.  So you need to flip the axle and turn it around.  (Breather drain and fill plug would have to be relocated).  Now what am I missing?  My question is can the axle be mounted up side down what is stoping me.  Axles are ran in reverse all the time, WHEN YOU DRIVE IN REVERSE.  Would it be safe to drive it like this or would the pinion gears have to be reversed?  Please everyone give me you opinion.  If it works you could use axle with electric locker, 2 four 1!

Yes this would work as long as you rotated the axle and flipped it 180 degrees HOWEVER,

Need to add knuckles, rotors, steering ect.....

The punkin would be in the middle-front d-shaft would be at a 45 degree angle.

Because the rear punkin housing was not designed to be a high pinion, how is oil going to get to the small pinion bearing? A reverse rotation factory high pinion diff, uses a reverse cut gear that would place the pinion on the oppisite side of the ring gear so that the oil is thrown at the pinion instead of slinging it away in your design.

I hope this makes sence

What you are asking about, is beening done very well in rock crawling rigs in Pro Rocks ect., but they are going very slow and most are using a ford 9" dropout run upside down reversed!!!
It would not last if run at high speeds on the road. The pinion bearing would burn up from lack of oil.

Yeah makes sence, and I was thinking about it more after I posted and remembered the diff. is in the middle of the rear axle not the side!  well guess I could go with the dana 44 axle like everyone else is.  Marlin will your hi crossover steering kit work with tacoma solid axle swap?

As long as you use a toy axle, it will work.
I knew you would realize your oversight :hammer:

Now on that waggy 44 do you have to cut it down and move the driver side perch in to match the factory toyota width between the springs?

any front axle from a 79 to 85 should work u mite have to move the spring pertches, but thats easy, an 84 or 85 axle would be the best to use because of strength, i hope that helps

The diff is on the drivers side on the tacoma and the others is on the right.  I would like to see the joints i would need to route my drive shaft down across the tranny around the bellhousing up into the cab around the brake pedal and back down to the 3rd member, and have no vibrations!  So is there a toyota axle with diff on drivers side?
