22rte 2wd transmission questions
« on: Nov 27, 2006, 04:21:20 PM »
i am wondering what kind of tranny does the 2wd 22rte have? i understand the 4x4 22rte trannys are the r151f but is this the same tranny they put in the 2wds?  also, if the 2wd tranny is a r151f, then can i bolt my w56 transfer case to it? thanks in advanced..

the tcase should bolt up, however the tailshafts on the 2wd trannies are different... the rear output shaft of the 4x2 tranny will need to be swapped out for a 4x4 one.... at least that is how a w55 basically turns into a 4x4 w56

I don't think the t/c will bolt up, as the turbo tranny's are 23 spline and the W56 t/c is 21 spline. I can be done of course, but I believe the t/c will have to be upgraded to 23 spline...

ah good point about that, i was thinking solely in means of the w55/w56 swap, not the fact of the 4cyl vs. 6 cyl/turbo

is upgrading the transfer case to 23 spline an easy job? i was thinking of going double anyway...or at least putting in lower gears for the box..

i really want to use the R151f if the 2wd tranny is indeed a R151f.

i read that i can swap out the 21 spline for a 23 spline, so if the 2wd tranny is a R151f then im set.

i bought a turbo 2wd extra cab and i'm planning on swapping that engine and "R151f tranny" into my 1985 4runner 22re. i will want to swap all my regular 22re stuff to the extra cab so it can run. i will put the w56 transfercase onto the "R151f" so i'll still have 4x4. will the W56 tranny work as a 2wd tranny? marlin, you are the master of toyota transmissions, please help me before i dig a hole i can't climb out of...

ya... you can use a w 56 as a 2wd tranny, just need to get the tail housing, shifter, shift rail and i think thats it... im doing the opposite as you... just talked to marlin today about it.... only bad part is you have to dissaembel the tranny about 90 percent of the way marlin said to change the shafts out... oh also the first gear ratios may vary with the 2wd trannys.... some have a 3.9?'s and the others have 3.8?'s from what i remember..... send me a pm or somthin cuz i will have all the 2wd stuff layin around and we could work somthin out...

swaping the turbo over to my 4runner will already be alot of work, i think i might just keep the W56 on my 4runner with the 22rte and put the 22re on the "R151f". i really don't have time to mess with using the 2wd tranny as a 4x4 tranny. Thanks for the information and offer Makohon.

New plan, i will just switch motors and not transmissions, even if it is a R151f. i am trying to do this over my winter break from school so time is very valuable.

the 2wd rte trans is just a v-6 trans same as in the 2wd v-6 trucks. it will have a high first gear same as the v-6 transmissions. find a v-6 4wd trans, run the rte bell, and buy the adapter to gear driven cases, it is way less work than you are planning.

if you want to you can use the trans you have, you will need the shift rails, extension housing and main shaft and shifter from a r-151 and you will still have like a 3.83 first gear which is worse than any 4 cylinder 5 speed trans that has 3.93.
