need some help with diagnosis
« on: Nov 14, 2006, 07:21:48 AM »
was out on the trails on Sunday.  I have dual cases and had the front case in low with the rear case still in high, still in 2 wheel drive.  all of a sudden I hear a clanking gear type nois from the area of the transfer cases. put in the cluth and put it in nuetral then try to move the gear shifter in the front case-no go.  try the second case-no go.  both locked up.  put the trqnny in reverse and it breaks the transfer cases frede and it drives fine until a little while later it does the same thing.  do the smae fix drive it some more.  now in 4 wheel first low and it does it again-same fix.  when it locks up the truck will not go anywhere until I put it in reverse to free up the binding.  all the drive shaft bolts are tight, ring and pinions are fine.  tranny is very new.  the dual cases is a used unit.  I know i have to rip it out, just wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone.  I am thinking the dual adapter is an older Marlin unit.  thanks, JR

it sure would be nice to know.  Will have to see about rebuild options, what marlin sells and what i can do myself if that is an option.  it always had a lot of noise to it, but not the bad kind. you have all your drive line pieces in order?  that was one of the hardest parts, locating all the right year joints.
