Air cleaner assembly
« on: Sep 14, 2006, 08:04:44 PM »
I need an air cleaner for my Weber 32/36.  Something big enough to not have to replace so often.  It has a square hole, but I could make about anything work.

I have a stock one, but on the bottom it has that weird ridge on it.  I need something flatter so I can seal the bottom to the carb.  I tried to cut my stock one, but couldn't get it to work..  I'm sure I could cut / weld it, but that is more effort than it's worth to me.

I found empi air cleaner assemblies that would fit at a local parts house, pretty cheap too.  You could always buy the empi, then throw out the cheap filter and put a k&n in it's place!  You could also check places that specialize in bug parts, you may hafta twist their arm (cause bugs don't run the 32/36), but they can get it.

The ones I'm talkin about are seriously cheap, like $10-20 or so.  If you find a bigger one that can be easily modified lemme know, I'd like to get something different than what I have now.  I'm running the adapter for the stock assembly, but it leaves a huge gap to suck in dirt.

Here is the adapter I use on my 32/36

http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGear/ProductDetails.aspx?PartUniqueID=08049BE9-C3FF-4543-AB2B-FB1792C65847

It didn't come with gaskets, but they were a piece of cake to make. I adapted a 10" X 2" generic air cleaner to it and it works great. No gaps or problems.

That's a really nice adapter, way nicer than the weber one I have.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I haven't checked in here due to being so busy with work lately.

I like the manifold quality wise. I haven't finished building the engine yet, so I can't tell you any more than that. I bought one of the Weber carb adapters from Offy because they didn't offer that manifold with a Weber bolt pattern. It's for a 20R and I wanted a Weber carb flange, dual plane with an EGR port so I could run my PCV valve to that port. The closest I could get was the dual plane, EGR for a stock carb mounting. I ended up making my own adapter. The Offy and Weber ones are a hokey 2 piece thing. I just re-drilled the manifold to the Weber bolt pattern and made up a spacer that is thick enough to get the ports lined up. Mine is a much cleaner deal with only 2 gaskets, one spacer and 4 studs right into the manifold.

I did run the Weber and the air cleaner on my stock manifold before I started the engine rebuild. I put about 300 miles on the adapted air cleaner and everything was great.

I am running late for work. If you want better or more info let me know. I will check in tonight.
