confused
« on: Jul 19, 2007, 12:56:28 AM »
Hello,
EVerywhere i read it says that a G54 has a First Gear: 4.452:1  but on here it says 3.93 first gear am guessing that this style transmission came out of a van? From 84 to 88 vans? thats why am confused  :flamer: anyways i wanted to use this as swapping out an auto tranny in my 85 efi.
Any info would be appreciated.
I might just go with a w-56 A 5 speed instead but this above just does not make since  :shake:

Go with a W or R series tranny, the G is the weakest of the toy trannys. Spend now save later  :twocents:.

Here is some info on the tranny swap if you need it http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=23833.msg254308#msg254308

I would definately go with the w or an r series trans. The g is actuall toyota's second generation of the four wheel drive transmitions, over the years toyota has found the week spots and made these things stronger. The w series is pretty easy to come by, the r series gets a bit pricey. You have to make the decision based on money and how hard you will wheel the truck.

EVerywhere i read it says that a G54 has a First Gear: 4.452:1

I have never heard of this.

I searched and found it listed on wikipedia, so I edited it and added the correct ratios for USA based Hilux G54 transmissions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_G_transmission#G54

It would be cool to put a W56-A into your truck since that is what an '85 EFI would have come with, but not only are the rare and difficult to find (only made one year), but the G54 would better suit your needs since you would only need to cut one hole if not none at all. On the W, you would need a separate hole for the top shift t/case, but not for the G.

I highly recommend using the W however as it is a stronger transmission, not by much, but it is still stronger.

thanks Bigmike, by the way does any know where figures are to see how much stronger the w-56 is vs the G54, how long do you think it will last in a stock engine and dual cases with stock gears in cases? and hardcore four wheeling, if its just a little bit stronger than whats wrong with the G54?
I would love to have figueres and numbers, of how much stronger or weak each one is.
Thanks for all you help. I tried to search before but nothin i will try again later tonight.

That's a good question. I know it's out there, but I'm not real sure where to get it. I will look into that. What I do know is, I am running a w series, and the last thing I am is easy on my rock truck. I have had no problems, I'm running front and rear welded diffs with dual ultimate crawlers, the motor is super strong and I have had no problem. However, I had a w series in my driver which has a chevy 4.3 that is very healthy, it through down just under 200 ponies on the dyno with 37's, I blew two of them up before I went to the th350.

Couldn't he just switch tail housings to make it a W56-c?

I don't think the parts will interchange, I don't know.

The best explanation on this will be from Marlin, so I will get him to comment on the strength differences later tonight.
