Beadlock on Stock Toyota Alloy
« on: Jun 24, 2005, 06:04:05 PM »
Just got it back today.

Champion Wheel welded a beadlock on my stock forged alloy.

It appears that these are not much more than 3/4" wider (where the bead sits that is...) than the stock wheel.  Looks like I'll be rotating tires often.  Overalll width is almost the same.

I'm not going to mount one up until I figure out what i want to do with the wheel color.  I'm going to PC it maybe a medium gray metallic for a contrast, but not too dark?  Needs to be brake dust color.   :p

How about some pics...

It appears that they machine off the outside lip completely and weld on their stuff.  I thought they'd just drop something in and weld it like the kits.  I think they did a nice job.

These will be getting BFG MT's (35's) for my 4Runner.

Bad a$$ man looks good. I had thought about that with mine but they have to much back spacing.

OK, polished ring is a given - although I may go for a standard ring as oppposed to the C3.  I thought the C3 would look good symmetrically with the 4 spoke design of these alloys.  I dunno - seems to cover up too much possibly?

I painted some of the wheels I had not sent out to Champion yet.

One color is Duplicolor "High Performance Wheel paint"  - in charcoal.  It leaves almost a wrinkle finish - probably should be clearcoated for a final finish.

This is a half assed effort at polishing them (the beadlocked one).  I followed this polishing writeup.

http://home.off-road.com/~kemanuel/SR5Wheel/SR5Wheel.htm

No heckling - this took a few hours as it is...

Then I tried a black color I use for all sorts of stuff.  SEM Trim Black.  Not sure how durable it is for a wheel paint, but I use it because the sheen is right and it always dries nicely.  It is the best black paint for misc stuff out there IMO.

Following are a few shots of all 3 versions together.  The 2nd pic below shows the charcoal paint closest to reality.

I believe duplicolor makes a black wheel paint that is probably more durable than the SEM trim black.  I'm leaning that way.  There was a bright silver available.  I might try that one for poops and giggles...

Anyone have an opinion on the colors?

I got them done at Champion wheel in Fresno.  Price depends on which lockring you get.

See the link posted above.  Mine were $176 for the C3 ring installed each.  I think I might go for the standard ring so you can see the Toyota wheel better.  The standard ring is $160 per wheel.

Guess I should follow up on this thread...

What color did I end up with?  None of the above.  I saw a cherry stock 94 with the silverish alloys and was inspired.  I painted the wheels with Duplicolor wheel paint (silver).  Seems to be some nice paint.

I was getting all worked up about getting the tire over the rim, until I found a writeup and actually tried it.  What a piece of cake.

I had some trouble getting the outer ring started because of the thickness of the bead, so I went and got some 1 1/2" long bolts (8) to pull the ring down so the supplied bolts (1 1/4" long) would reach.

Also - I wanted to use the flush mount stems, but the welded ring is in the way, so I went with 45 deg angled stems.  Hopefully they won't get ripped off.

I got some alloys from over rev that I am currently running and I love the look. I am actually thinking of going with your idea when I am in need of a beedlocked wheel. The silver looks very good. I like the smaller ring too. Do they have PC rings? What tire size do you have there?

The rings are available either polished or anodized (anodized costs more).  They'll just get beat up and look bad - the polished will look better longer.  I was thinking about blue rings initially, but got talked out of it.

The tire is a 35x12.5R15 BFG Mud KM.

I think they are like 4 1/2" BS.  They won't fit a solid front axle without either wheel spacers or a widening job with IFS wheel hubs.
