R15x gearbox strengthening - thrust washer etc
« on: Jun 13, 2006, 03:36:11 PM »
Hi guys. Im on the hunt for information about toughening up an r154 gearbox for my Supra, and you guys seem to have plenty of experiences with these R series gearboxes.

In supras, this often happens to the thrust washer behind 1st gear:

...I've talked to a few people that have had their own thrust washers made up and case-hardened or treated (not through-hardened like the stock one) to help it last - is there another/better way of fixing this problem? I thought marlin-crawler might offer some type of needle roller thrust bearing replacement as it seems like the failures are partly because of a lack of lubrication. Can anyone give me a solid solution for this thrust washer?

Im going to use the marlin crawler h/d bearing cover also. Other than this, are there any other recommended upgrades for this gearbox to make it last really well behind 5-600rwhp?

Thanks for any help

Gene

I got too lazy to read through the whole thread, but it seems Marlin was looking around for a way to upgrade the thrust washer but ran into price problems.

Thanks Mike :)

cheap sunglasses; that thread's quite interesting, i didnt realise a supra guy had been in here previously looking for a fix for the same problem.

How about straight cut gears (1-4)? Has anyone ever priced this up? That sure would be a permanent fix.

My new stock washer turned up this morning. From looking at it, im not so sure that it is entirely machined. It kinda appears that the piece has been cast, then the 2 faces have been machined, and the inside has been *mostly* machined out (though the machining didnt quite touch a part of the inside).
