Roof rack / Kayak rack ideas?
« on: May 03, 2006, 04:35:25 PM »
I am going to fabricate some sort of a roof rack or kayak rack for my toy.  I need to be able to haul my 2 kayaks to the river and still have room in the bed for the cooler, camping gear, ect.  Anyone have any ideas?  Or has anyone fabbed a roof rack before?

I was thinking of maybe running it up from the bed somehow and just letting it hang over the cab without actually touching the cab...  But I don't know for sure yet.  If anyone has an idea, I would love to hear it!! :flamer:

Use a lumber rack.    had a buddy that used one for that very purpose.  Could still use the bed,  and he could unbolt the lumber rack in about 5 minutes, and pull it off.   :beerchug:

My kayaks are about the same length as a canoe, and I would probably haul my canoe on it too.  I thought about a lumber rack, but I would rather fabricate something semi-permanent.  That way I don't have to have a place to store it when I'm not using it and don't have to mess with taking it on and off...  I may fabricate something that can serve as a roll bar and add a piece that will stick over the cab to it...  I'm going to go pick up square steel tubing in the morning and go from there with it.  I still haven't come up with a good design, so I'm open to suggestion...

I was thinking something more like this, only modified...  With a section that goes over the cab...

Or perhaps something like this, only a bit taller with a piece extending out over the cab...

You could probably fab a ladder rack pretty cheap.  Not the coolest looking, but I'm sure with some love, it'd come out ok.

Yesterday I picked up some 1 1/4" 1/8"wall square steel tubing, and some 1 1/2" 1/8"wall square steel tubing.  I though I may as well fabricate rock sliders while I'm at it!!   :woohoo:

on an old work truck, we used to have a removable ladder rack

It came with base plates that bolted to the sides of the bed, and then when we needed to haul something, we'd slide the legs of the two sections (front of the bed and back of the bed) into the premounted brackets, slide in some pins, and go.  this would probably work real well with some kayaks, andwhen we were storing the rack pieces, they didn't take more than 6" deep of space, so we'd keep them behind some shelves in the warehouse
