Anyone know the difference?  I put one in my '84 hilux but it didn't come with a shifter.  Am currently using the G 52 shifter with no way to hold it in except by keeping my hand on it and the shifter boot.  Had a junk yard ship me a shifter supposedly out of a W 56,  Looks strangly like my current shifter except the shifter plate is different.  Was there a W 56 with a forward shift case?  I think the trans came out of an '89 4 runner but not sure.

Yes, what you got is a W56-C, a 1989-1995 W56 that uses a late-model forward-shift style t/case, most likely a Type 6-A.

The difference between a W56-A and a W56-B is that the center support plate on the 'A' is Aluminum while the 'B' is cast iron. Also the reverse idler gear on the 'B' has a more narrow foot.
