86 trans and case into 79??
« on: Dec 14, 2003, 08:25:32 AM »
ok, Dave said the G54 is 5 inches longer than the L52,  heres the deal :_order: i know of two 86 pickups i can get cheap .   should i swap the trans and case from the 86 into my 79 or ship the G54 and both 86 cases to Marlin for a deal on a L52HD, and can i use either of the 86 cases for a crawler,    at 4000rpm on the interstate i desperatly need a overdrive  :driving:

actually i had thought of getting both trucks stretching the frame on one enough to put both cabs on to have a crew cab :yipes: :dunno: :dunno: :headscratch:

Glen, That crew cab would be nice :eyebrow:. Well both T-case are forward shift and would need to be converted to a top shift( only for the front sence you have a top shift in the 79 truck now ) if your going for a L52. If you go with a G54 then 1 case will work for the crawl box and  put your 79 case in the back. Your 79 T-case has a rasied spline on the input and will only work in the back of the 4spd. All you have to do is swap it out with a 81-83 input. I'll give you the gear input gear when your ready. I would go with the L52HD . With the modifations installing the longer trans its not worth it unless it was a R :grinhat: series Trans( IMO ).

thanks Dave  thats kinda what i wanted to do anyway, so going with the  G52 , one of these 86 cases will have to be converted to top shift, then put in on trans, using my 79 tcase in the rear.  how difficult is the topshift conversion????
oh yea  what mods doi need to do to the 86 front shaft to be able to use one until i can get a high angle  :dunno:

oh and get this , yesterday morning i went outside to go to work and my truck was gone :yipes:   after a brief panic i found it about 200yards down the hill backed into a tree,  my rear bumper looks like a big black banana now, luckily it took all the impact.  everything that was on my dash was in the seat and my toolbox broke loos and was at the rear of the bed, but luckily :smack:no body damage

well gotta run, have to get those lanes open befor the 30th or i wont get that bonus,

how much stronger is a g54 than a g52?  i plan on swapping out the old l43 for a 5 speed eventually and i've been checking my options.  if i could find a g54 or w56, i'd probably put it in

Glen, you mean L52 not G52 right :smack:. The top shift conversion will be a piece of cake if its for the Front case. The crawler box only uses 1 rod and 1 fork( a rear case uses 2 and 2 ). Wil sell the crawl box rod and fork for 25 buck + refundable core. When you build the crawl box you just install the new parts. You will also need a shift base that will bolt where the tin cover is. The 86 CV won't allow enough movement. I seen a wright up about have the clerence the IFS cv joint to work. I've never done this before but it didn't look that hard.

Not much stronger but the G54 has larger bearings so it should run cool which would make it last longer. The W56 would be the better choice but a G54 would work great if not pushed hard or used behind anything with more power than a stock 22R.
