Funny problem
« on: Mar 23, 2006, 03:22:10 PM »
My truck today 85 carb 22rr block started to loose power, backfireing, woulden't rev fast, and the RPM guage was going bezerk. I went out looked under the hood, checked all wires moved a few around the ignitor/coil and noticed the ignitor was bolted to the fenderwell and was just about rusted off does the ignitor/coil need to be grounded.

My Toyota ignitors had to be grounded when I did my swap(LS400 v8). Prior to grounding them, it would not start and threw a code.
I think a good ground is likely to solve your problem.

I don't think that will fix your power issues. I mean, this really sounds like a combination of problems. I'd start by going over all your grounds. If one is rusted out, then you can bet there are more in bad shape. Then give that thing a tune up and see what it does for you after that.

It has all new tune up parts and works fine again i still think the ignitor needs to be regrounded. Still has poor gas mileage.

Yes, the ignitor needs to be grounded. Factory it was through it's body, to the fender well, re ground it, it seems to me that since it's not grounding, you wouldn't be getting full spark, all the time. Which, would cause you to loose power, just as if you weren't running on all cylinders or if you had a bad ignitor.

I have always been under the impression that anything electrical needs to be grounded   :twocents:
