I just spoke to the Host and a really cool guy helped me out. He says that it's the forum's fault, but in the past when I have reported this problem to SMF, they told me that the host is not good enough to run such a forum...... :ack: So I am going to talk to the SMF once again and see what can be done.

I would bet you are maxing out the forum for what it was tested for. Anybody else have a forum this intense that isn't having problems?

No, there are plenty of other people who are using SMF forums that are like 10 times larger than this. I don't know what the problem is. The host told me that the forum is not "closing a question to the database" but I don't know enough about SQL to look into it.

I dont have time right now to talk to SMF, so I will have to do it later tonight or tomorrow morning

it's pretty simple to understand, see at the bottom of the page

Page created in 0.*** seconds with ** queries.

the number of queries is the source of the problem, but the problem don't come from SMF, you see, some host will limit the number of query a user can make in a time interval.

So if there's an average of 10 query each time a page is loaded and about 200 visitor a day, that make 2000 request a day, if the max question is set to 50 000 for a month then 30x2000 = 60 000 queries a month.
Now I know that you have several user to access the DB but some time one user exceed the maximum and the DB block the future request from this user.

Solution would be to ask if they could remove or increase the maximum number of request for your user.

i dont own it, but i belong to www.explorerforum.com and have been a member there for several years and never have seen a problem like what we are seeing here on the marlin board. explorerforum has a lot of members and a very high volume of traffic

I am super happy with SMF and when I went to complain about this problem the first time it started happening, they immediately told me to get rid of IPowerweb.com.

Thanks for the info 88runner. The last time I call IPowerweb's tech support I was told that it gets reset every hour, but yesterday the guy told me it gets reset every 24 hours.

This thread took 22 queries, so that's just over 2,200 times a thread like this gets opened up in 24 hours to throw the error. And you know what? The stats report that there were 36,044 page views yesterday. And right now I am spreading the load over 40 users, so that's 901 views per user yesterday. Well, thats no where near close to 2,200 but maybe certain users saw more usage yesterday.

I won't have time to call them back today, so for right now I am going to add like 10 more users for the database :ack:

So if I go with a new host, the majority of hosts out there will do site transfers for free, or what? Last time we switched we didn't have a database.

Ok, it's up to 60 database users now. I will call the host again either late tonight or sometime tomorrow and see if they can increase that limit for us

Mike, Have you checked this host out yet?

https://www.liquidweb.com/

I have had them for the past few years and never had a problem.

Granted I don't have a super cool fourm and site like yours, but you should at least look into it and let me know what you think.

Mike, you ever check out BARF(bay area riders forum)?  Their site appears to be quite a bit bigger than this, and I've never seen a problem like we have.  It's locked up once, but that's all I've seen.  If you get a chance it might be worth gabbing with the administrators there and see if they have any advice.

Also, used to be if you clicked on a member's board name and viewed their profile, it would show what they were doing/viewing at the bottom.  Call me crazy, but I kinda liked this feature.

It's way more advanced now, but in 4th grade we were using IBM's writing code (there was no Windows platform or Apple)
