« on: Mar 10, 2006, 10:30:14 PM »
I have heard of people putting 20r heads on there 22r engines and gaining power, how does that work, what do you have tod do and have to make the swap? , and is it doable to a 22re, is the swap a reliable engine for thre what would the hybrid re milage be like any answers to the questions would help i have both a 86 truck with a 22r and 85 4runner with a 22re so answers would be cool
:wall: I wanna be able to street race my trucks against my friends v8 stock geared chevs on 38's and will but they dont actually think i have a beefed engine under my hood

I have this conversion on my truck, and no you cannot use a 22re without major PITA mods. It is a straight swap on a 22r with no issues. It will bump your compression a bit and the 20r head will give you modest increase in HP in stock form. It's when you modify the 20r head that you gain significant power gains. Oversized valves, larger cam are the major improvements that can be made to increase power. I also have a smog legal header and the double roller timming chain. I usually barely pass smog, but I also probably could get even better performance if I didn't have the stock 20r carb on it.
