clutch questions
« on: May 19, 2003, 12:03:48 PM »
this weekend i broke the center out of my clutch disk
it was a stock toyota clutch with about 2500 miles on it
so now i am left with no choice but to upgrade
my choices are marlins shd kit ,centerforce dual friction or a centerforce 2   has any one had luck with clutches other than bad luck like me
this is the second clutch in 7000 miles that broke the first was a kragen so i bought a factory toyota and that also broke please let me know

i think it went something like :dunno:,,,,,,,, "the centerforce doesnt grip anybetter than the stock clutch until rpm is built"
, thats why i went with his clutch :~~:the disc on his clutch looks like it could hold up to a sb chevy :thumb:

The problem is with the Dual Friction Centerforce clutch.

As with any kevlar clutch or other 'plucked' clutches (including ceramic and metallic) is the theory behind it. By using a reduced surface area, the amount of pressure per area is increased thus resulting in a stronger--or better holding clutch. However, the reduced area and increased pressure beats the living :pokinit: out of #1 the pressure plate, and #2 the flywheel (especially if its a cast wheel, chromoly wheels are much better).

Now this bad wear will only occur if you slip the clutch. And in order to slip a plucked clutch with less surface area and more frictional pressure, you will need some real power and Im not talking about a 'R' engine, unless its a R-TE engine (turbo).

So the moral of the story is, if youve got big power, then you'll need alot out of your clutch. So you might be inclined to use a 'plucked' clutch disk, but beware that if youve got some real power that can man-handle that pluck disk, then your going to go through clutches, pressure plates, and flywheels like a wet saint bernard dog going through a cat door (ive always wanted to say that).

If your running less than ~220 ft. lbs torque and a stock transmission, or more percisely, a stock clutch/flywheel size, then I would not use a plucked disk if you care about your flywheel and things that last.

Have a nice day,
BigMike

Just checked the Marlin web page on clutches.  Seems Marlin only makes these for the mini pickup.  How about the LC FJ40 F engine?   If not, any recommendations on upgrading from stock?  Centerforce?

Last weekend I installed Marlin's SHD clutch. First time I depressed the clutch pedal I was blown away, I actually had to put in some effort to push the pedal. This clutch is sweet. I have had the truck for a while now and had never stalled the truck until I installed Marlin's clutch. Now in the last week, I have stalled twice.  :smack: This thing grabs like crazy. I have since "learned" the clutch and have no problems but just shows how quick this thing wants to grab and clamp down.

i have marlin 1200lb clutch and with a 5x10 trailer with 1/2  a cord of firewood loaded on i have to keep a board across the back to keep from leaving sticks of wood at the red lights :_order: :driving:MARLIN ROCKS

befor the marlin clutch my 20hybrid could roast a clutch disc in 3 months and if i hammered it on a hill, instant slip.    not with the mc1200,  :_order:the go pedal just mean acceleration :flamer: :flamer:

My engine tranny-tcase combo I bought came with a centerforce II, or the one that's just a little better than stock.  It's fine, good feel, whatever, my next clutch will probably come from marlin though. Oh, the best part about my Centerforce is that it is gold.  It's nice to look at in the three times I've removed my tranny since I first put the thing together. HA!
