Clutch/Tranny help needed
« on: Feb 27, 2006, 12:05:00 PM »
I have an 85 Runner in which has been needing a clutch job since I have owned it.  I went to start it one day and the clutch would not engage at all.  I assumed the clutch slave and replaced it.  I installed it and bled it into a rag while somebody else pumped the pedal.  I was able to get the clutch to engage but there was much slippage and little movement.  At this point I decided it was time to replace the clutch with a Marlin kit.  I finished yesterday installing the new machined flywheel (.026 step) and heavy duty Marlin clutch.  Reinstalled the tranny and drove it out of the garage.  My driving was limited to the driveway because of an extremely dead battery and the fact that the I couldn't shift into gears after I drove the truck out.  The clutch pedal also felt soft.  My guess is that I need to re-bleed the slave using something more than a rag since I could have sucked air back up through the bleeder.  Does that sound about right?

Are you sure the clutch master is good shape? Not Leaky or letting air into the system?   This is where I would start.  :yesnod:

No, I am not sure.  I have not even touched that yet except to add more fluid.  Is the only way to check it to replace it?

no, pull it off and stick a screwdriver into the plunger press it up against something and see how it opens and closes.. it should be fairly tight and firm. If not then its going out.
