« on: Mar 10, 2005, 06:15:29 AM »
Last night went to the gym was leaving and truck turned over ran for 2 seconds and died, :rivers:  crancked it over and over still no start, My brother picked me up.  We went back about an hour later with a tow rope, and it started :circle: , drove it home, it drove fine, this morning went to go to work, and nothin just cranked.  I think it might not be getting fuel, but haven't had time to check ,I'm at work right no and truck is at home but need an Idea of where to start.

PLEASE HELP

This is EFI or Carb? Do the basics.. Check for spark and fuel. If you have both, then check your fuel filter. It's your daily driver, so the fuel is less then about a week old, right?

Yah it's a 22RE and fuel in it is 4-5 days old,  The first time I cranked it and it ran, but it stall out like it ran out of gas, I havn't had a chance to check for spark,  :dunno: but when I crank it, it sputters a little bit like it is trying to start but just isn't gettign the fuel it needs.

I just replace the fuel filter 15,000 miles ago, and it was about 40-50 out side.  I think it might be a relay or sumtin, I have an fsm on my computer at home I'll look at the schematic when I get off work.

Try looking for a crack in the air tube between the air box and the throttlebody.  Had a similar problem one time at Moab. Expansion/ contraction of worn plastic.  Fixed with a few wraps of electrical tape.

This problem is that there is more air getting sucked in at idle than the Mass Airflow Sensor (in the airbox) is detecting,  engine leans out and stalls.

Good luck

Any chance that it jumped a tooth on the timing chain? wait, that doesn't make sense since you drove it that one time.
I had a similar problem and I had accidentally knocked my Mass air sensor harness off the box just slightly and it did a similar trick. Do the simple stuff too--check all those vacuum lines and connectors. Check your timing if you can too--but this is a long shot.

Like these guys said, check basic stuff before you go tearing into things. I used to be a huge advocate of DIY on your truck, but if this is your daily driver I highly recommend a good shop that wont screw you over to diagnose whats up. And then YOU do the labor.  I spend over 400 bucks on my cherokee by troubleshooting myself when I had the exact same problem. Turns out it was the ignition coil....after i changed fuel pump, distributor, and other misc stuff.  Good luck I know its frustrating!

Checked for spark Plenty of that, A toyota master tech showed me how to check the fuel pump operation, by opening the air flow meter, and I could hear the relay clicking, and a slight very slight wine of the fuel pump, so I cracked open the cold start injector line and....nothin, so I thought it might be the filter, so I went back to the lines that go to the tank and took both of them off cause i didn't know wich was the return, so I had my dad open the AFM, and...nothin but I could still hear the wine, so I am going to pull off the bed this weekend and test the pump, and see whats up, I plan on bobbing my bed anyways so I guess i will kill 2 birds with 1 stone.  and then all I have to do next week is install my R-151 and save up for Dual ultimates

Thanks for all the input
Joe

I would have to second the battery terminal thing. I have had that happen on several trucks of mine.

what about the fuel pump?

the relay on our explorer for the fp was going, and 50% of the time it wouldnt start, after i did some checking, i figured it was the relay, and just popping the hood and tapping it, got the relay to unstick and work

Thanks for the help guy's guess I should follow up on this.  what I ended up doing was replaceing the fuel pump and it runs like  champ.  The only problem I still have is I had to jump the fuel pump test teminal under the hood, and let it build up pressure before it will start, not that big of a deal just have to turn the key to on and let it build up pressure for about 10-15 seconds.  Other that that it's fine now.
Thanks
Late joe.

Yah, I replaced the regulator, shortly after cause the fuel pump was really winny, I took off the return line and wasn't getting any fuel back to the tank.  Needless to say I was getting really bad fuel economy or lack there of.  And about a year before that I replaced the fuel dampner at the front of the fuel rail cause it was leaking. I have no idea what it is, it might be that an injector is stuck open and is leaking pressure off.  Cause I'm still getting bad fuel milage.  like 11 mpg if i'm lucky. but I really don't want to spend the cash on that now cause i'm saving up for a 3RZ, just waiting for an adapter to mate it to my R-151 tranny, so hopefully Marlin will come out with a 3RZ kit here soon so there won't be that much down time, cause this is my only means of transportation.

Thanks for the help and input guy's
