2.4D deisel pickup!!??
« on: Feb 09, 2006, 10:36:51 AM »
I just bought a sweet pickup from the origional owner that runs great.  Like the subject says, its got the 2.4D engine in it.  It runs perfect but i'm just wonderin' if any of you know much about them or can point me to a thread about them.  I've worked on many 'o' 20 and 22r's before but never one of these.

how do you think it would do 'wheelin??  It's fuel injected so I imagine it would do ok in off camber spots.  with the right gearing and t case(s) maybe?  anyone ever wheeled one before??

It prob makes really good torque....I know there are some people over on YotaTech who are swapping overseas diesels into their trucks, supposed to be a pretty good swap, not sure off hand what motor they are using though

I bet if you go back and check they're swapping in a 1kz-t from an early 90s toy.  They're supposed to be much more powerful and reliable than the 2L or 2Lt.  And rockcrawlitoy, I'm really surprised somebody beat me to posting that link!  It's a fairly quiet site with not a lot of activity, but some really good info to be had.  I'd gladly do an L series swap, but given the assenine price of early toy diesels now, it's much more feasable to just buy a half cut from jarco and have everything you need to do the swap for the same or less than it would cost you to buy a donor truck.

Yeah, they were talking about the half cuts, that seems like it'd be really sweet, not to mention, being able to run off of bio-diesel to save yourself some dough!

Not that a dodge cummins is comparable, but I know my 4x4 diesel truck didnt have the rpm range to make it through a puddle let a long a full blown mud hole, although i will say it has pulled quite a few other trucks out of mud holes. I wouldnt want to run a diesel off road (manual trans) just not enough top end when you need it. red line is low 3000 Rpms, Just depends on your wallet with the right gears and rears it all can be overcome. Good luck with that diesel

One of the guys on that toyota diesel forum is from jarco.  If I ever do it you can damn well bet I'll start brewin my own fuel!  I like $.70 a gallon a lot better than $3 a gallon!

I am thinking about doing a turbo diesel conversion. I'll probably get my half cut from Marv of Spector offroad, my buddy does the diesel swaps for him. I was really surprised at how they perform. One of the Cruiser my buddy did a conversion on, cruised at 80 with no effort.

Nope man, redline on a 1kz is like 5,000 rpm!  They're revvers for a diesel.  I forget what the hp is, but in stock form they have 220ft lbs of torque.  I'm sure some tweaking can pull out some more ponies too.

So I did a search on using propane with a 1kz and so far it looks like you hafta be pretty precise with it or you risk hampering engine life.
